Which essay question are you answering?

Now that we have written our definition paragraphs for the academic writing exercise that is Part 5 of "Cultural Anthropology," we can proceed to our major writing assignment for this term: answering one of the controversial questions on this list. We know not only that they are all highly controversial in society generally, but the survey we did previously (June 22) shows substantial disagreement on many of them within our class.

  • In a comment below, explain which of these questions you are going to answer.
(Note the verb here, and that it is imperative.)

  1. I will answer question 6 to response Robert Nozick's idea of paying taxes as a form of slavery. This question is related to not only duty of citizens , but also the discussion on the power of states towards people's private life. This also leads to bigger debate between anarchism concept and those in favor of welfare state. However, the question seems to be very clear that Nozick's idea is so radical that can be argued against by other perspectives.

  2. I am interested in the controversial issue about abortion and avoiding eating meat among Buddhist.

Should abortion be banned? I think this issue is very important. It is wrong to kill other living things even though they do not born yet. But for some people who are not ready for taking care of their babies or they are rape victims, abortion might be a good answer to protect the following social problems.

Buddhism topic is another interesting issue for me. I have never thought of this kind of thing but after reading the topic, it might be better to reconsider this. Eating might not equal to killing, but it can be consider as a cause of killing. If we don't eat meat, butchers might kill less. On the other hand, we are not the one who kill them, so it might not be our false.

  3. I am going to answer the question about the abortion because I think it is the easiest question for me as in Thailand, we can news about abortion almost everyday. It seems like it is a serious problem in Thailand.

  4. I am answering question 3 about euthanasia because it is one of the topics which are controversial both in many countries and our class. It is kind of moral dilemma in any cultures. Apart from capital punishment, this is another way about killing humans which is done for a specific purpose, not because of revenge or fighting or war and so on. However, interestingly enough, there are a lot of solid ideas to support both sides to discuss whether doctors should do this or not. Do killing and healing go together? This raises many questions and ideas to discuss about doctor-assisted suicide. Should it be legal or illegal? Is it against religious beliefs?

  5. I would like to answer the question about justifying the law to protect the freedom of speech including hate speech. Because the right wing now is the trending of all over the world. You can see it in the referendum of the Brexit and also the tremendous popularity of Donald trump nomination for the President. I think democracy word can deal with this problem without suppressing this kind of speech and belief which might not help much or support the tolerance in the society.

Telling the people not to speak this doesn’t mean it will disappear. The belief is still in the circulation of the society and we cannot cope with the problem or find the counterargument to correct the misunderstanding of the people in the society. The law which is used for oppressing the hate speech doesn’t lead to the intelligent and healthy society, which need tolerance and space for discussions. In contrast, the person who speak the hateful conversation will face the social sanction even there is no law to punish them.

  6. No one has chosen the question about the 2nd Bush's first election or the one about human rights for non-human, so we can usefully look at those for our discussion of the check questions at the end of the list of essay questions.
