Before we read (Bixby & Scanlon, 2013, p. 88)

What we read
As usual, Bixby and Scanlon have a prereading question for us to think about before we read their chosen text.

Skillful's question to respond to
When you were young, do you remember a place that was secret or mysterious or where you used to hide? Where was it? What did you do there? Did you play games, read, talk with a friend? (Bixby & Scanlon, 2013, p, 88)

  1. the first idea that came to my mind were some of the places at Sydney University, which is Australia's oldest and full of hidden gardens and courtyards that I suspect most students never see. These were wonderful places to sit and read alone or with a friend. They were also mysterious places to explore in the company of a friend in an altered state of mind, which was popular with uni. students in my day.

But I wasn't so young then. My next ideas were closer to home. My family had left some virgin bush areas on our property. My brothers and sisters and I loved to explore there, and we found small, places areas where over hanging trees and vines made small secret enclosed places for meetings.

Now that I think about it, I once got into serious trouble when some of my classmates and I dug out a system of tunnels under one of our primary school building. That was exciting and perhaps fun because it was also very naughty. We didn't really need them, but we used candles to light up our tunnels.

    1. It seems like there is no my secret place, but it has our secret place where our group of friends belong and spend time together. Have you ever thought of a place where you merely spend time alone without any friends? For me, It is high school library where I spend my lunch break reading books alone. Even though it has a lot of people there, I consider that is my secret place because there is no one knows me. So I can enjoy reading without interruption.

  2. i was born in a small village in Siberia. And it was a perfect place for children: almost all day we can play on the street with other children. It was absolute freedom. It was absolute happiness. I had a lot of secret place. Usually I spent time in our garden, I had a secret small "house" on a tree. My parents helped me to build that place. It was amazing! I had my own place, where i can played with my friend, talked with them, and kept my secrets.

  3. When I was very young around five years old, I used to hide in a small tunnel in the school playground with my friends when I did not want to join sleeping hours with the classmate because it was very boring. We played together and had some talk in the playground, but we would be hurry to hide inside the small tunnel when we saw our teacher searching for us near the playground.

  4. When I was in primary school, I had a place in my school that three of my best friend and I knew. We called "Silence place," and that's because we found it was a place with not a lot of people there then we dealt that this was a place we would come after class or anytime we told each other to come. We could do homework or talk or anything. I really miss this place and all my best friends.

  5. the village I lived had a lot of ongoing-built houses, I always rode bicycle around the village looking for one of them to be my place. I went to the house and built table, tiny room, and also add some books there, so I and my friends can meet there and have conversation together. Something, we got caught out by people around there. so I have to move to another house and rearrange it again.

  6. The place I used to hide when I was a kid was the third floor of my school gym. This gym is an old gym in my school. There are three floors in this building, the first floor is music room, the second floor is sport gym and the third floor is storage room.

For the truth, student were not allow to enter this room because this room is very dark and very dangerous because many old sport facilities were in this room. If we touch it, it might fall down.

However, we like to go to play in this room. I like to play hide and seek with my friend every lunch break. So this room is the place I used to hide when I played because even my friends knew that I hid in this room, they could not find me because it is too dark. So I could escape from this room before they found me.

  7. There is a slide which made like a castle in my community. When I was a kid,I always spent lots of time to stay there with my brother, sister, and cousins as it is just like our own shelter and we also play games in it.What's more,we also talked about secrets to each other. To us,although this place is very simple and nothing special, it is fulled of our pure childhood memories.
