Painting Van Gogh by T. F. Chen, 1991 |
However, Hartmann limits her discussion to a much narrower set of art: the visual arts, starting with the image above on the opening page of chapter 3, and we too can probably ignore the difficult question of what art is, even if we do not limit ourselves here to the traditional visual forms of art that are the subject of chapter 3 of Quest (2007, p. 71 - 104).
Write down your responses to Hartmann's questions on page 73, as below:
- Look at the picture. What images do you see in the painting? Are they realistic?
- What do you like or dislike about this painting? Why?
- What is your favourite work of art? Why do you like it? (p. 71) You need not limit yourself to visual art in responding to this question.

From the picture, I see the woman with two different-colour face were sitting. Beside her, there are a table which fruits and vegetable were on the table. In right-hand side of the image, there is another human-being who turn his/her back and drawing some painting. i guess, may be this human-being is drawing the picture of the two-face woman. Absolutely, It is not a realistic but abstract oone. Personally, I don't like this work because the tone colour of the work. It's warm tone, I prefer the cool tone and also I am not quite clear about the meaning of the picture.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite work of art is Frifa Kahlo's work. Because, all of her work is so tense and meaningful due to her dramatic life. And I guess, she is the one who is recognized as the underdog because she was maxican woman. It's quite dufficult to become the artist that the whole world recognize. Fuethermore, almost half of her work were done during she was a bedridden due to her serious injured accident. This impressed me because it show how "art" work - alleviate and give the meaning of live to someone whose life were almost meaningless.
In this picture, I see a man painter is painting a picture of a face.
ReplyDeleteThere is a woman sitting beside the man. From looking at her dress, she is probably rich. Both of them seem be in Europe.
I like two paintings in this picture. They show faces that I think it is difficult to paint in such a small space. I also like the cloth of the man. it has three dimension and look real. I don't like the face of the woman in this picture. it look like she has no emotional. The face has two color and I don't like it.
My favourite work of art is Phantom of the opera. It is a great performance that show beautiful voices and many emotions of performers. I love watching musical performances.
EDIT*
ReplyDeleteFrida Kahlo
The images in this painting are two people which one of them is painting a picture while the another one is sitting near him. This painting is not a realistic one because woman's skin has both pink and yellow which are not happen with the same person in the real world.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I like this picture because of its colors; the artist of this picture used varieties of colors which made it so lovely and colorful. Moreover, My favourite work of art is Van Gogh's the starry night picture because it is a colorful night and when I see this I feel relax and calm. Also, literature such as Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis is my favourite work of art because the story reflects the real world greatly and made me feel sad, happy, frustrate and so on as the same as what one of the main character feel. It is an amazing and awesome work I have read.
The image that I see in the painting is the painting artist and some model. The image is not realistic. It was painted by the famous artist, Van Gogh.
ReplyDeleteI like this painting because it contain many colours, and it's easy to understand. After I grasp at the image, I can notice almost immediately what is the image about. That is, I can infer that in the image, the artist is painting a portrait of the woman model.
My favorite work of art is stage play. I like it because this kind of art is not only show acting, but also show the singing potential of performers.
In the painting, I see a woman is sitting in one room, maybe a work space of a man who is painting. I think they are not realistic because the woman, especially her face, has pink and yellow skin.
ReplyDeleteI don't like this painting because I like painting about nature which is realistic and looks calm. I don't like colors in this painting, and, in fact, I don't understand this painting.
My favorite work of art is Iplehouse dolls, a bjd, especially doll names Jessica.I really like it, but I don't have one because it's too expensive. I think it's very beautiful and looks like real woman.
When I look at the picture, I image about the famous painter that paints a lot of picture, while the women modeling wait for him to paint her figure. And It isn't a realistic picture because even if it look like the same with figure but it have different Technics for express his Idea.
ReplyDeleteI dislike about this painting because It's not my style. I think kindly of his work always used a lot colorful to express his emotional impact, and always make me confuse and puzzle while looking at his picture.
My favorite work of art is Inicio [Not sure about the name of it] of Michel Angello that is the most beautiful sculpture in my eye. It's a lot of detail of fabric, express of feeling, and so on.
The picture isn't realistic; I think it is surreal because human not look like this in a real world. In there, it shown images of a man and a women both of them were sitting. A man must be an artist and a women is a model. They were in a drawing room ,which had a table and a door.
ReplyDeleteI do like this painting, personally I admire Van Gogh's work because I like his unique technique of using colours.
My favorite piece of art is a painting of ballerina from Edgar Degas, the french artist.
Again, a usefully varied set of ideas for us to think about.
ReplyDeleteWhich of your classmates' responses do you agree with? And disagree with? Do you see any possible misunderstandings that you could clarify?
It's a strong start to our coming discussion of the ideas Hartmann presents in chapter 3.
I found it really hard to pick one favourite work of art. As soon as I started thinking about my favourite work of arts, many works of art came to mind. Most of them are works of literature: novels, essays, history, poetry and the like.
ReplyDeleteI guess a reasonable choice is Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I've probably read this one work more times than any other. I have four copies of it on my bookshelves, two being of the same Oxford Classics edition. Three of these are falling apart I've read them so many times. But they are all paperback: maybe I should have invested in a couple of hard back versions? Now, this masterpiece of English literature is on my Kindle, and that one won't wear out with use.
I think one sign of great art is that it does not become boring with repeat exposures. I love crappy action films, such as the Terminator and Die Hard films, but although they are great for a couple of hours entertainment without thinking, they are not something I would want to watch many times.
Jane Austen, on the other hand, gets better every time I read her. With each reading, I notice new complexities and connections in the story and Austen's language, new brilliance in how every word serves multiple purposes: telling the story, describing characters, creating mood, and so on.
It's probably about time for another reading of this classic.
I also enjoy the BBC Television version of the Pride and Prejudice. It brings Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy to life very well. The producers sensibly stay very close to the novel, and copy much of Austen's dialogue.
