The palaeolitic culture is distinguished by using stone tools, altough its tools didin't have precise shapes and we don't have less relics than medicletics' tools. They hunted animals and had ceremonies to promote their huntings results. From the moon shapes' designes on boons, we can assume that they had similar inteligence to us to use a calender and to record important events. They seem to have initiation rites.
ReplyDeleteI chose the images of the stone knives with Tip's worries in mind, and the Willendorf Venus because although it's very different and not an art form that Kottak discusses in the excerpt in Quest, I thought you might like to speculate on how well it fits in with what the paintings and tools tell us about Palaeolithic and Mesolithic culture.
ReplyDeleteThe Paleolithic era is followed by the Mesolithic The Paleolithic is used stone tools, they made tools of stone, bone, and wood. Also they used their tool create cave painting that is the way to record important stories of their life of communicate with others even reflect of their religious or ceremonial purpose.
ReplyDeleteThip's response makes me wonder how different Facebook is. When we compare the purposes, isn't Facebook also about recording important events in our lives?
DeleteOf course there are also apparent differences. For our ancestors, creating the record was not as easy as typing a few words on a smartphone. On the other hand, a Facebook entry is normally forgotten a few hours, or even minutes, after it's written, whereas we are still studying the paintings created by our ancient ancestors 30,000 years ago!
Thank you Thip for this most thought provoking comment.
During Palaeolithic period, people mainly used tools made from stones for various purposes such as hunting, cutting, making the fire and the like. Their culture is greatly described by their cave paintings. It can be presumed that hunting played an important role in their lives and they had ceremonies for hunting.
ReplyDeleteThey also made the use of the moon phase as a calender to mark the important events in their lives.
