Discuss it online & Sports Fans and Identity (SkRW3, p. 12, Developing critical thinking)

What we read

Having now read both "Discuss It Online" and "Sports Fans and Identity," the two readings for Unit 1, Bixby and Scanlon (2013, p. 12) invite us to discuss the ideas that the two texts raise.

Bixby and Scanlon's questions

Think about the ideas from the two readings, and then write and publish two separate comments to answer each of these questions:
  • What is your most important chosen or group identity? Why?

  • Do you think that most people are more interested in being unique or belonging to a group? Explain why.

You can write your two comments in any order, but write and publish a separate comment for each question.

Remember to follow the examples of Ali K. and Paul S. by writing answers that are standalone paragraphs; that is, your responses to them should make sense to readers who have not seen the questions you are answering.

  1. 1. In my opinion i prefer core identity is the most important because the core identity make me unique. It's can present my personalities, values and skills such as my core identity is I am a simple and relax personal style so if i'm have critical situation i feel uncomfortable and then i will do something easy and make me happier.

    2. Yes, i think most people are more interested in being unique or belonging to a group because the human is social animal so a unique or belonging to a group will give them fell secure and confident and make people have identity for connecting people.

    1. But which one of your chosen or group identities is the most important to you? Your comments about core identity are interesting, but the question is about chosen identity, not core identity.

My important chosen group is being a part of electronic music community in Thailand. It important for me because of it motivate my life and my way of thinking through researching about technology, history of music, producing music and I can also exchange information, ideas with many people from various background. I think electronic music community in Thailand seem rather like a platform more than just a group because it open for people who insterested in sound, music politics.

    1. Thank you Bank, it's an interesting group, and you give plenty of explanation to explain why it is so important to you. Perhaps a few more details and examples would help. What do you do in the group? Do you perform? Where? With whom? When was the last time?

  3. To be honest, the first question is extremely difficult fro me. Nevertheless, to the best of my knowledge, if I have to pick only one of my chosen identities. I will choose being a big fan of Manchester United to be my best alternative. It is because I have been supporting Manchester United, also known as one of the top 6 of English football club, since I was very young. Supporting that team made me have a lot of friends who are interested in the same sport. We can feel free to talk about our favorite teams although we are on the opposing side. In addition, it also made me interested in playing football and made me have a good health and nice body.

Actually, I really think that most people would like to become a part of unique group. The main reason is because no one can deny that humans, by nature, are social animals but they also want to have some unique differences from others. To elaborate, from me personal experience, when I was in high school, I wanted to get admitted to the number one university in Thailand which a few students are able to do because I wanted everyone else accept my capabilities and wanted to be in a part of intelligent and unique group. To put it succinctly, being a unique one can make other people pay attention on you and totally respect yourself. These are all the reasons that I can currently think of.

    1. the comments about us being social animals interested me. It reminded me of a book I read last year Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. In this best-selling book, the author emphasized the importance our stories, such as religion, political ideology, sport groups, money and other made up figments of our collective imagination, hold for our ability to organize in groups, which is what has made our weak species the controllers of the planet we inhabit.
