Skillful 3: Reading and Writing, page 135 - After you watch

What is it? 

In their concluding exercise to the introduction on page 135, Rogers and Zemach invite us to discuss three questions that follow up ideas in the video we have just watched, (2018). The three questions all invite us to apply the ideas in the video to our own experience, or to give our own opinions on related issues.

Response 

As we have just done before, we will discuss Rogers and Zemach's questions here in blog comments, which is likely to generate a wider variety of ideas in addition to giving us a more permanent record of our ideas while also getting in some practice writing for fluency in a less academic style, but still writing our ideas in grammatically complete sentences that clearly state our ideas

Questions

After thinking about them for few minutes, write down your response to Rogers and Zemach's  questions in a comment below. You probably want to write two or three paragraphs. 
  • Do you think such a law would work in your country?
     
  • What would the off off hours in your country be?
     
  • What other laws could you introduce to protect the work-life balance?

You have 15:00 minutes to plan and write a response to the three questions. I suggest you divide your time roughly as:
  • planning = 3:00 minutes
  • writing = 10:00 minutes, and 
  • editing = 2:00 minutes.

Remember, your writing should make sense independently of the question it might be answering, so it would be useful to give background, which can often be done by paraphrasing the question into statements that begin your answer.

  1. I think that the French law would work in Australia. Our cultures are not exactly the same, but are similar enough, and I think that most AUstralians recognize that it's important to have a healthy work-life balance.

    But it could be hard to enforce. I'm not sure how the French are going to. If my boss, for example, emails me at 8:00 PM about a new student who has registered late, he might be annoyed if I don't respond. I think that must influence how he treats me in future, and other employees. So although the French law sounds like a good idea, I'm not sure how it will work. Perhaps it customers were clearly told that they could not get an answer until the next day, that would be OK, and IT could block sending emails to employees during the off hours. Actually, blocking emails sounds like a good idea: the manager could queue the email to be sent, but he would know the employee would not get it until the next day.

    The off hours chosen by La Poste sound reasonable, at least to start with. It's an experiment, so we should expect that we might learn something different worked better. That's normal.

    In addition to making legally protected off hours for employees, I think the law regarding working hours could be changed. I'm not sure that with the increasing use of machines and other technology it is really necessary to work a traditional 40 hour week. If everyone normally had a four-day work week, with three days of every week, that would give us much more time to enjoy our lives, and come back to work refreshed and ready to be productive. This could also be good for other problems, like traffic: people could take their long weekends on different days, so the rush hours would not be the same for everyone. Actually, I think I'm suggesting abolishing the traditional weekend, or maybe just keep one day off that is the same for most people, and allow them to choose any other two days in the week.

In my country, prohibiting drinking alcohol when driving is effective law because there are fewer rates of car accident in my country after established this law, especially on the festival of Thailand’s new year. This festival is a day off that many Thai people prefer to drinking alcohol while they driving back home, visiting friends and family, and travelling. This causes many injuries and tragic loss of life.

    It should be 16.30 pm – 08.30 am.

  3. I think the laws would be works in my country because there are several employees and their everage time working, problably 8 hours. If we provide this law that would help a lot of employees. The law should reduce the time to work and should be balance with family time, for in stance, my mom works in office for 8 hour that means a lot

  4. Base on my experience, many Thai companies have adapted this concept for their employees and it's going well. However, adding this idea in the law system can result differently.
    In certain organizes might have special conditions that don't suit this concept. For example, it's might be a too extreme instance, the doctors should be contacted easily despite being out off their working time because we lack medical human resources in Thailand. However, I also concern about their work-life balance.
    Overall, I support this concept and strongly believe that it will be a good condition for the majority of employees.

According to new French law that will help people to have better work-life balance off their work hour, this is a good idea to help people from stress and burn out but this thing might not happens in my country since my country not even care about human right so there are no one to rise this up.

    In our country standard of off work hours is 8:00 a.m. until 5 p.m. but there are variety in each type of company for example, in the entertainment business when we do shooting work hour separate into two shift for morning shift start from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. but for the night shift we start from 6 p.m. to 12 p.m. or 12 p.m. to 6 a.m. but there are not rule to protect people working continue three shifts with out day off.

  6. There is difference on law and ethic, law is based on written rules that authorized organization imposes, however ethnic is relied on individual aspect. Various groups of people will have divergent ethics, so unethical behaviour occurring in one group cannot be considered illegal. For instance, in religious concept, for some it might be unethical to eat some kinds of food product, however for other groups
