Getting into Unit 6 = Disease (SkR&W3, p57, Discussion point)

What we read

As usual, Bixby and Scanlon introduce "Disease" with a large photograph and some questions to get us thinking about the coming topic and ideas in Unit 6 of Skillful (2013, p. 57).

Bixby and Scanlon's questions

Discuss these questions in a comment.

  • How have medical technology and treatment changed since your grandparents were young? What about your parents? How have they changed in your own lifetime?

  • What are some interesting or amazing uses of technology in modern medicine? Give as many examples as you can.

  • What types of medical advances do you think, or hope (fear?), the future will bring?
Write two or three paragraphs to address the questions in any order. Remember, it's response writing where we want your ideas written down in sentences as quickly as possible. Think for a minute or two, and then write. Then write your next idea, and the next one. And repeat.

For clarity, write as though your readers have not seen the questions. Your writing should make sense as an independent piece of work.

  1. When my grandparents were young, medical technology was very basic. There were antibiotics, bones could be set, and simple operations could be done, but I don't know that doctors then could really do very much. But since the 1920s and 30s, medicine has improved enormously. I think it's now possible to keep hearts beating almost indefinitely, and to replace hearts and most other organs, which are changes that have occurred in my own lifetime. I remember the excitement of the first heart transplant when I was in school, and that was a long time ago.

These days, when my friends have operations, it is typically via key-hole surgery, where the entire operation is done through a very small cut, rather than opening up the patient as was normal in the past.

But the most amazing advances that I could think of are drugs. I remember in the 1980s when AIDS first began killing people that there were no drugs, and then there some drugs that helped a little, often with awful side-effects. Today, the drugs are so powerful that people with HIV can live perfectly normal lives for as long as they would have lived without the disease.

And i'm sure that the amazing advances will continue over the coming years. Like my phone, which is now a powerful computer, the technology keeps getting better at ever faster rates. Maybe one day we'll be able to lie on a Med Mat like in teh movie Elysium and the machine will detect and correct all problems in a few minutes.

  2. In the past, my grandparent told me that her mom gave birth her bythe traditional surgery. The traditional surgery is the way that doctors came to home and used some materials to surgery. After finished sugery, doctor gave medicine that made form herb to heal my grandmother's mom
In present, the technology has been changed, people go to hospital for heathcare. This way is better than in the past because it is clean and safety. The lasik is the amazing use og technolohy in modeen medicine because it can help people who have prombelms about āļ°their sight to be normal.
Moreover, the type of medical advances in the future is using one tab of medicine to treatment every deisease.

    1. I remember that I was amazed when I first heard of Lasik surgery. Perhaps because I'm old, I haven't had the courage to try, although it worked very well for my father, who was much older when he had it done after wearing glasses for decades.

  3. Nowadays, people live longer life than the past, due to the advance medical technologies and treatments which had been developed during a past decade. People with a heart decease is a good example to prove that with the higher technique of modern medical technology, the doctor can do his surgery far more easily than in the past, and also the benefit will be appreciated by the patients as they don't need to spend longer time at the hospital during their recovery.

  4. Medical technology has been changed a lot since my grandparents were young. For example, there are many techniques which are created for medical treatments and make human can survive from harmful illness. In the past, patients who had cancers would die so fast, but today there're chemical treatment or efficient operation for eliminating those bad cells.

Nowadays, there are many amazing technologies in medical field, such as stem cells technology, operation with nano camera and tools, and vaccines. I don't know much about medical things but I know that those technologies have been developed for decades for extending human's life expectancy. I believe that in the future they will be more developed than today's. However, I also believe that virus and diseases in the future will be more dangerous, the medical technology should be used for protecting illness, not only treatment.

  5. 1.In the past some of the devices in medical technology are not small enough to travel through a blood vessel. Some are so large they fill an entire room...
    2.nano bots
    stethoscopes
    sphygmomanometer
    digital finger blood pressure monitor
    thermometer
    x-ray
    ultrasound
    etc.
3.I think that in the future sciencetist will bring more medical technology and treatment...

  6. Medical technology and treatment changed since my grandparent were young because it didn't have enough medicine and doctors. Mostly they treated by natural from the tree or vegetable but now the technologies are better.

  7. Medical technology and treatment have been distinctively developed comparing to the past at since our grandparents were still just children. Medical tools and inventions are now advanced to support the newly discovered diseases appearing on human bodies.

I always notice those amazing technologies used in the hospital I visited. The most significant one for me would be the MRI scan which could produce the detailed image of the inside human bodies. I believed this is generally utilised for cancer treatment purposes.

In the upcoming future, I strongly hope that scientist would come up with the new invention in the medical world such as cancer identify and treatment machine which could identify the roots of the cancer and able to get rid of it for good.

  8. Medical technology and treatment have changed a lot since my grandparents were young. In the past, people only used traditional herbs to cure the disease, made medicines by plants and did massage for relaxing the muscle.
Although these methods are effective for my parents'generation, the new technology has developed and changed the medication. For example, nowadays Physicians use machines and robots for operations, produce medicines from chemicals and inject to cure the diseases.
In fact, there are also some of traditional treatments that people who don't like the chemical-using use these remedies in my lifetime too. They think that it's cheaper and they don't have to waste their time to see doctor. If they use the correct methods,it will be a good effect for their health.
