Freedom for every gay and lesbian

Nowadays, more and more people become a lesbian or gay. It is quite common in many countries. Are you a gay or lesbian? A lot of gay or lesbian rights advocates support that same –sex marriages should be allowed by law. Do you agree or disagree with that? Do you think that same –sex marriages means lesbian or gay get equal human rights? When I saw The New York Times, a headline named “Behind N.Y. Gay Marriage, an Unlikely Mix of Forcescaught my interested.

In “Behind N.Y. Gay Marriage, an Unlikely Mix of Forces”, the writers said that in the 35th-floor conference room of a Manhattan high-rise, two of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s most trusted advisers held a secret meeting a few weeks ago with a group of super-rich Republican donors. New York’s Democratic governor was determined to legalize same-sex marriage (SSM).

In my opinion, gay or lesbian should be allowed to marry in law. In the past, American adults refuted SSM, except in about ten states and the District of Columbia. Because of most Americans, marriage is a religious sacrament or ceremony. If the definition of marriage is changed to allow SSM, some religious individuals and groups feel that they will become at risk of having to infringe their beliefs by being forced to marry same-sex couples. However, the world is changed. More and more people realize that gay and lesbian should be allowed to get marriage. Marriage is hallowed, it conveys stateliness and respect towards a couple that make a lifetime commitment to support each other. It is not only a process of reproduction, but it also is a way that symbolizes a couple love each other, they want to live together. So, same –sex couples deserve this stateliness and respect. Moreover, getting marriage is one of kind human right. Everyone has right to marry the person who you love, no matter they are male or female. We should not forbid same-sex couples marriage. To sum up, gay or lesbian should be allowed to marry. You can disagree with them, but you should respect them.

  1. I agree with Gloria that SSM should be allowed. Marriage should be the basic right of people. And it is not like polygamy that many people disagree with. However, the resistance of SSM coming from conservatively religious people is also strong enough to make the thing more difficult. As Gloria has suggested, it would be better if they admit that now the world is changing. Some religious ideas might not need to be held too tightly.

  2. I heard about this news also. It's all over Twitter. And New Yorkers were celebrating. The Empire State building, one of the city landmark, was bathed in rainbow light, so very beautiful. http://mashable.com/2011/06/25/empire-state-building-rainbow-twitter/

I'd love the idea of allowing SSM. But I understand the conservative people's concern also. Like, my mom, she doesn't look down on gays or anything but she thinks allowing gays to be on TV so much is like encouraging people to be gay. So she also concerns when she sees this news.
Maybe it's just the gap between generations. Homosexual is not a thing to encourage for her. For me, I think it's okay to encourage people to come out since being gay is not a disease ... it's just being who you are and it is a great thing to protect your rights, stand up and say you wanna get married. It's perfectly normal, and I think my generation thinks this way also. It wouldn't be too long until SSM is allowed everywhere in this world. We'll see.

  3. Perhaps the religious leaders have a point: they invented marriage, and after first taking control of the legal recognition of their religious sacrament, the state is now changing it in ways that its patent holders would never have considered, and have not authorized.

How long the state has been in the marrying business? And should it be? Should governments take any interest in who is marrying whom?

But I think that Gloria also neatly answers these concerns when she notes why people do now expect the state to take an interest - it has little to do with legal rights, inheritance laws, tax and so on: all of those things could be granted perfectly well under a civil union.

  4. And what's wrong with polygamy? (Liu, June 27, 2011 4:27 PM)

  5. Excepting many Islamic countries, making polygamy illegal seems to be one prerequisite for modernizing the country. According to the major trend of current civilization, we regard polygamy as unfair treatment for women and child.(http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Polygamy) Though I could not show statistics now, I believe that people in the US regard this action as immoral as well as illegal, otherwise there should be some strong rally to legalize polygamy in the US. Though, there might be some organization approving this practice (Mormon), most Americans are likely to disapprove it.

What I claim here about SSM and polygamy is that most people might not be objected to SSM, while they might disapprove polygamy. Therefore, there should not be a very strong resistance over legalizing SSM from people.

  6. If women could, and did, have multiple male, or multiple female, marriage partners, would that dissolve the sexism concern that counts against polygamy?

And I can't resist asking: should people be allowed to marry themselves, or do they have to abnormal enough to have a full blown dissociative identity disorder before they can do that?
