On pages 40 and 41, we read and then summarized the article "Fire in the Sky", so we have read it very carefully to understand the ideas. Now, we want to reflect critically on it.

As usual, Bixby and Scanlon give some specific questions to help us develop our critical thinking skills (p. 42).
- Why do you think that fireworks are such a popular form of entertainment at celebrations around the world? What do you think they symbolize?
- What are some other ways fire is used for holidays and celebrations in your culture? What about in other cultures you know about?
For ten minutes, write down your ideas in response to these questions.

I'm not very excited by fireworks displays, but I loved cracker night when I was a child. In Australia, we celebrated the Queen's birthday with fireworks. I suspect that there were a lot accidents because for a couple of weeks, there were fireworks, or crackers as we called them, everywhere. Kid's let off small bangers everywhere. And throw downs exploded with a very satisfying bang when we ... threw them down hard on the ground. Bigger crackers could be quite dangerous - I'm sure that at least some of the stories I read of hands being blown apart by double bangers were true. And all of the pretty Roman Candles and things could easily start a fire.
ReplyDeleteBut we lived on a farm, and every year, my family had an outdoor party at night. We barbecued meat and played with our fireworks. They might not have been as impressive as the New Year pytotechnic displays that light up the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but they were ours. We chose them. We lit them. And we loved the brief, bright shows that they put on. My, brothers, sisters and I ran around in the dark with hotdogs in one hand and sparklers in the other. Fortunately, our parents were very watchful, so we never got away with anything too dangerous, but that wasn't true for everyone. Sadly, the regular accidents caused the government to ban fireworks on for private use when I was around 12. Today's kids miss out on that excitement and danger. The ban seems reasonable, but I'm not sure that it is: taking risks is a healthy part of growing up, and it seems ot me wrong, immoral, to punish everyone because some people are stupid or reckless. Cars kill a lot of people every year, so the same sort of reasoning means that cars should be banned! Really! And some people use alcohol badly, in fact, it's the most harmful drug to society, but no one is rushing to ban alcohol, even though that would be far more justified than the popular bans on many other drugs that adults like to use without harming other people.
I think firework is popular around the world because it is a signature of celebration and many people like it.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why people related firework with celebration; however, when I see firework I think that it have to have some good things for sure.
I think firework can symbolize happiness. Because everyone seem to be happy when they saw firework.
Camp Fire is usually use for celebration in my culture. In the past, people did camp fire in order to cook animals after they had caught it. And they celebrated their success by dancing around camp fire after finish eating.
Why do you think that fireworks are such a popular form of entertainment at celebrations around the world? What do you think they symbolize?
ReplyDeletePeople is used to celebreate with it and so it is tranditional that why the descesder always use it for the celebration. However, at the begining of the firework peroids, people use it for the celebrate since it is loud and light. People always use very loud sound for the celebration event the victory from the war, for an example.
What are some other ways fire is used for holidays and celebrations in your culture? What about in other cultures you know about?
As I can think right now, in the northern part of Thailand, we use fire to decorage around the house in, which kind of candle but it isn't, in Loy kathong fastival.
Another is that we use the birthday candles, light them up and put it on the birthday cakes.
