Study Skills - Editing and Proofreading Strategies- Skillful 3, p26

Skillful 3, page 26
Source background
In our version of the writing process for academic work, we don't stop at step 4, writing, which is in fact only half way through the process of producing a strong piece of academic work. The following editing steps 5, 6 and 7 are also important, which is why good writers tend to spend time on these editing steps.

On page 26 of Skillful 3, Bixby and Scanlon present some concrete ways that these steps can be done (2016).

Some questions to respond to:
  • How do you edit or proofread your own writing?

  • Why do you think it is  important to become skilled at editing and proofreading? (Is it important?)

  • read the five tips from Bixby and Scanlon.
    • Which ones have you used before? Did they help your writing?
    • Which ones would you like to try? Why do you think it will help your writing?
For ten minutes, write down your ideas in response to these questions.

  1. I think reviewing and revising is extremely important, as to academic journals which will not normally publish a piece of work until it has been reviewed and revised several times.

I always review my own serious work a few times before letting anyone else see it. And I sometimes make very substantial changes - I might move or cut entire paragraphs because they are in the wrong place or just not related to my thesis. If a piece of work is important, I ask a peer to read it.

I thought that one of the ideas Bixby and Scanlon suggest for proofreading was interesting. My English grammar is excellent, but I often notice mistakes in my work later. Unfortunately, I usually notice language mistakes much later. Most are not serious, but some are, for example if the "not" is missing. The serious mistakes usually happen when I change my mind half way through a sentence, and forget to revise the first half to match the new second half. This is sometimes embarrassing. Other mistakes are the usual sort of typing errors, which I don't worry about too much, although we don't want them in formal work.

I like Bixby and Scanlon's tip number 4 - to read your work "backwards sentence by sentence." I guess this works by forcing to forget the ideas and focus on the language.

I also find that other people are very good at picking up my small mistakes, just I'm good at spotting theirs while easily missing my own.

  3. I normally proofread my own reading one day after I had finished writing. This way can help me see some mistake point that I ignored and edited it.

It's importance to be able to editing and proofreading because once I can edit and proofread I will know the mistake which can help me improve my writing in the next time.

I used to ask my classmates to read my paper before sending. This way can help me improve my writing skill because it give me a chance to ask my classmates about some complex grammar that I didn't understand.

I like to try creating a personal editing checklist. This is a new way and may be a great way to help me improve my writing skill.

  4. How do you edit or proofread your own writing?
On my writing, I proofread and edit by reading again to check whether my idea in the reading is correct. Then I will check for the grammar correction. In this step, I check it by my own first, then I use the correct grammar application to check it.

Why do you think it is important to become skilled at editing and proofreading? (Is it important?)
Yes, it is. I think it is very important skill because it is make your writing correct both ideas and grammar, and it will easy for reader to follow your writing and ideas.

read the five tips from Bixby and Scanlon.
Which ones have you used before? Did they help your writing?
Which ones would you like to try? Why do you think it will help your writing?

Editing for ideas and organization is the one that I usually use for my proofread. It helps me that my writing is same as my idea or not.
I would like to try "create a personal editing checklist" I think I will help my writing better and provide me not to rely on the grammar correction application.

  5. How do you edit or proofread your own writing?
I should create my checklist for my writing that consists of grammar, vocabulary and organization.

Why do you think it is important to become skilled at editing and proofreading? (Is it important?)
In my opinion, I think it is important because you can see errors and problems yourself. If you can see your mistakes, you will see your weakness and improve your writing.

read the five tips from Bixby and Scanlon.
Which ones have you used before? Did they help your writing?
I used a reverse outline and read backwards that can help me correct some mistakes such as grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Which ones would you like to try? Why do you think it will help your writing?
I would like to try create a personal editing checklist because it can check my mistakes and edit my writing by myself.

  6. I do check my grammatical error. I also look up some word that i don't know how to use in a sentence on the online.

I think proofread is important skills because it makes my essay clear for reader and it also makes my writing fluently.

I didn't read five tips from Bixby and Scanlon, then I don't know what they are.

  7. We edit or proofread our own writing by checking organization of our writing and I think it would be useful to imagine yourself as another reader. This will help your judgement to be unbiased. Then, check topic sentence and concluding sentence in each paragraph. That was how we should edit our paragraphs. For proofreading, we should pay more attention to grammatical errors and typos.

In my view, being able to proofread and edit my own works is a salient skill. Doing so will make you independent of others' review when submitting your works and therefore less trouble in the future.

I only used to use the first and the last strategies: to edit for ideas and organization and to ask a classmate to read my paper. I think it have helped me many times.

I want to try creating a personal editing checklist and doing a reverse online. I think it will reduce my errors.
