My's academic interests

I have several academic interests. First one is typography. While I was in university studying Graphic Design, I obsessed with type design and dream that one day I will have a typeface of my own. However, that has never happened. I work in advertising now and that dream fades away. But I still like to read books about typo, joining type conference and look at typeface and see how beautiful its serif is.

My second academic interest is history especially history of places I visit. I usually bought a lot of history book to carry with me when I travel. I feel that being in that real place make history alive.

  1. I also interest in history of places too. When I visit some place, I love to look and learn why it was build like this and why it was named.

    1. One reason I like Shanghai a lot is on every old building, they put short history of the house on the sign on the wall. I like to walk along the street and read them. Do they have it in Beijing?

  2. Your second story reminds me when I traveled with my sister, we went to one museum which is very famous in Europe. We took 2 hours from hotel to that museum, but we spend 30 min to walk around and took the picture. We didn't study or read the history of that museum before, we knew just a little background about it. And after we back home and google the history about it. It was very interesting.

    1. I sometimes do that too when I'm too lazy to read. Hahaa. But knowing at least a little bit of background about the place we visit, really make the trip more fun and meaningful.

  3. I can't say that typography excites me a lot, but I used to be very interested in, and practise, calligraphy. I loved the artistry in medieval manuscripts, and since my own handwriting has always been awful, I thought that studying calligraphy might help. It sort of did, but calligraphy takes time, so my handwriting tends to quickly go back to what you see on the board every day.

Now that I almost only ever write on computers, I think my handwriting is getting even worse. I'm sorry that you have to suffer for that. Maybe it's time I started practising calligraphy again.

And Mee wrote that she is interested in the history of Chinese characters, so perhaps she is also interested in Chinese calligraphy.

    1. Calligraphy is beautiful. It needs a lot of patience and concentration (which I don't have) I never knew that it can help you with handwriting but I guess it takes a lot of practice like you said.

For me, being on computer all the time not only bad for my handwriting, but also my spelling because of all the auto-correction and spelling check tools.
