What we read

We have now read and checked our understanding of "Discuss it online," the first reading in Unit 1 of Skillful Reading & Writing Student's Book 3 (Bixby & Scanlon, 2013, p. 9).

Our response response

Having read the text a couple of times, Bixby and Scanlon now invite us to respond to the ideas in it in a critical thinking exercise.

My response

The research solidly shows that brainstorming or discussion activities for groups are more effective if participants start by working individually (O'Connell, 2010; Markman, 2017). In fact, experts at Harvard University's School of Management and elsewhere are sure that this can be very effectively done using online tools (Chamorro-Premuzic, 2015). Blogging is one effective way to do this, which is the reason I've turned Bixby and Scanlon's discussion exercise into a quick blogging discussion. Over the coming weeks, we will do several of the discussion exercises as online discussions, which is also a common aspect in university classes today, as we see in the example that is the reading on page 9.

Bixby and Scanlon's questions

Bixby and Scanlon ask two questions. We will do them as two separate pieces of response writing.

  • First question:
If you had to write a response to the discussion board question, what part of your identity would you mainly write about? Why?
    • Think for one minute, and then write. Write complete sentences. Our main purpose here is to communicate our ideas fluently and clearly, which is why it's important to write in sentences. However, this is not a formal academic writing assignment. You have six minutes to write one or two paragraphs responding to the question.
    • Remember: write as though your readers have not seen the question. Your writing should make sense to readers who have not seen the question.
    • Do not go on to the second question until I tell you to. We will do something else before that.

  • Second question:
Why is the family an important part of a person's identity?
    • When I tell you to, again think for one minute, and then write for five minutes to respond to this question.

  1. The part of my identity that i would mainly write is, probably, the chosen identity because i can give some specific reasons and explanations about why these chosen identities were chosen.

    1. My first idea was to write about core identity, because like Ali K and Paul S., it seems the most important, but then I decided that in fact the one I have no control over, my given identity is really what makes me the person I am. But I also like your idea about chosen identity. Perhaps if you could add a reply to give some of the supporting reasons you had in mind, that would help to both explain and support your idea here. In the meantime, my own examples include things like my choice of what to study at university, which was not what my parents really wanted, but had an enormous impact on making me who I am today. As did my decision to travel overseas many years ago. And the almost accidental choice of Thailand as the first place I landed in.

    2. I like your concept of how chosen identity is so important. Although I firstly think that chosen identity is the most important because other people can notice and understand me easily, I didn't think about giving them explanations or reasons of what i like. People might know that i like playing basketball, but they don't know the reasons why I like it. From your concept, I can let them know that I like playing basketball because I watch a Japanese cartoon called Kuroko no basket and feel that basketball players look great. This makes them understand more who I am.

    3. The reason behind my idea is that writing or talking about your chosen identities can tell another person, for example, whether which one we like, dislike or about the things that we interesting in common. In my opinion, this topic is easily communicate and understandable than core identities and quite more interesting than talking about ours given identities.

  2. If I were writing to answer the lecturer's question about my identity, my first idea would be to talk about my core identity because I agree with Paul and Ali that it's the most important. But when I thought more, I think that my given identity might be more important. I have no control over my given identity, such as my family, but actually, my family was a major factor in determining my core identity. My family are of Italian descent, and that has had a bit effect on making me who I am today. For a start, I have some attitudes (core identity features!) of Italians, such as a healthy love of good food, and the importance of family. But even where I've made different choices, such as rejecting the Catholic religion I was brought up in, the family influence remains strong.

  3. The chosen identity is a topic I choose because the chosen identity is the first identity after you are born that you can't select what you are going to be.

    1. Looking through them, chosen identity was a popular choice for your classmates, although it was not the first one I thought of to write about, or the second. But when I thought about it more, and read your ideas, I can see why it is a popular choice.

What are some examples of the choices that you would write about? Are the similar to Ali K's choice of being a football player, or soccer player as American's call it? What are some of the choices you made that identify you as you?

    2. I will write by suppose you meant it is gifted identitiy that is identitiy that you got when you were born. I know that gifted identity is actually important, however it’s the one that can’t be changed or difficult to changed. It’s important as sysmbols to identify ours but it can’t be used to judge someone. To judge someone I prefer to judge them by core identity because it’s their real identity and how they will act with us. We Shouldn’t judge them by using gifted because since it’s what they got reluctantly. Skin color, Nationality, sex and age are examples of gifted identity that they don’t matter in my opinion. I got black-skin friends with kind heart but white-skin friends with selfish trait aswell.

    3. What do you mean by chosen identity is the first identity after you are born that you can not select? In my opinion the reason that you give is given identity but i might be wrong. It will quite helpful if you give me some example or explanation behind your choice that will clear out some misunderstanding of mines or may be yours.

  4. I would write about chosen identity as it is a interesting topic to narrate through experience. I can also relate my identity to my experience that make it is more understandable to the readers.

    1. I agree with you on an interesting topic because sometimes we have something to say about we love or interested in but sometimes people don't have the same interesting things or attitude. I make me sometime to find a group to talk about I interested in. Apart from my Gang, I have a group of friends who love k-pop songs. We will talk about k-pop news and sing k-pop songs together which make me feel happy and comfortable when I stay with them because I can talk in a topic that I really interested and they understand and listen to me.

    2. It is true that a chosen is an interesting topic because there are so much story to talk with in a whole day without making someone boring . Plus, this will make the others know more about you and it would be great if they prefer the same thing as well . As a result , it may strengthen your relationship and allows you to meet new social communities who like the same things . For my experience, my bestie girls at school are prefer to listen to international's song such as Thai songs and K-pops . Also , we enjoy to watch a movies together at the theatre or even in the school's computer room . My friends all have their different favourite movie genre and this lead me to experience new things as I began to watch a Korean series and Netflix . Admittedly, I found that watching new style of movie is also fun and make me unstoppable for this.

  5. I think I am going to talk about core identity because it’s the most important identity of ourselves. Core identity show how we truly are. If chosen identity changed, core identity still the same. Even though given identity changed, the only thing to describe our behavior is still core identity. If we met someone for a long time, we don’t care about chosen identity anymore. We only care about core identity.

    1. Although I tend to agree with Ali K. and Paul S. that core identity is usually the most important to us, I'm not sure that I agree that it's the most important to other people. We might think that, but in reality, we first see the physical appearance, which is largely given, although people can make choices about that as well, such as whether to exercise or not, to colour their hair, to have cosmetic surgery and so on, and the next thing we usually think about are chosen things like job, education, clothing style and so on. But perhaps if you explain your idea a bit more, adding more detail, I might change my mind again.

    2. Chosen identity may increase ones' look in reality and it's what we see as first impression. However I think core identity will manifest more and more after we got along for a while and true character of his/her will show up. If he/she has good chosen identity such as celebrity, professor, doctorial educational degree or whatever but the core identity of he/she has totally negative behavior like selfish, racist or dishonest I think I can't get along with he/she for sure even though they have good chosen identity. Another example, I heard the story of a guy with dirty stain on cloth wandering on the street. At that moment, lorry was lost control and drove straight to the little child. Evwryone on the pavement, even a man in tuxedo suit and Rolex watch leaped out of the street frightenedly except the guy with dirty cloth. He ran to that child and save she in the nick of time.

    3. Thank you Thee.
Your explanation and supporting examples are great. And you give us enough details to clearly show how the examples support your idea.

    4. Firstly, I think that chosen identity is more important to me because people who have the same preferences can not only join me but they can also invite me to do some new activities which I am interested to together. After I have read your comments to the question and to teacher Peter's reply, I changed my ideas towards chosen identity. I only thought about doing things with people in order to have fun ,but I missed the most essential point which is the people's personalities; for example, I get a new friend to play basketball with, but he is really selfish and doesn't pass the ball to any of teammates. I think I can't get along with this kind of people for so long.

    5. I support this point because core identity is the only identity that will never change through our lives. Unlike chosen identity, we tend to change it when time pass by. What I mean by that is when we find new interests or get some new experiences, we may leave the former chosen identity behind and pursue the new one depends on what we like more. That causes people surrounding us to be confused if they don’t know our core identity. However, there are some parts that I don’t agree. I think we should also care about chosen identity and given identity even though it’s not as important as core identity. I believe our relationships and societies will be better if we know how to balance those three identities.

  6. I want to talk about the my chosen identities. Chosen identities show people who you are easier than others because chosen identity is what we like, and what we want to join. My chosen identities are league of legends player, and basketball player. My friend can easily know that i like basketball by seeing me in the court.

    1. I agree with your statement. Chosen identity show people who you are easier than other identity. After i read some of your examples, i can roughly understand your characteristics. Although chosen identity is not quite as strong as core identity to identified who you really are but it can tell people what are you interesting, taste and style. (I think listening to basketball story is, actually, more fun than your core value story things lol)

    2. Even though your opinion is not the same as mine, I think your idea makes sense. Some people can know you from the first glance by seeing you playing basketball and games but when you start to know new people, chosen identity is only a small part of it. I think they might look at your core identity first to know if you and they have something in common such as behavior, lifestyle, character and personality. Following to this, they might ask about your passion which is chosen identity so I still believe that core identity is my first priority.

  7. I was a happy girl. Three years ago, I moved to Bangkok to study in a new school. Everything around me changed. I had to adapt myself to a new environment including new friends. More terribly, I had to live on my own. This turned me to be a sad girl for a while. But after I realized that this was not my core identity, I started making new friends and calling my family more frequently. Finally, my life is back to normal. Plus, I've got a lot of new interesting experiences.

    1. I really congrat that you recovered your core identity and discover your new experiences. After I read your paragraph I presume from your word that you also set core identity as first piority for judging someone. If I misunderstood I’m really sorry but if it’s true, It’s the same as mine. I think that core identity is more than just behavior. It also serves as our selling point for other people to be friend with us. If they like our core and we like theirs, we are going to get along very well. It’s not only affect how people react to but also how we felt when being ourselves and did great behaviors that are our core identity. I hope you have a better and better like from finding wonderful experiences and good friends as I am trying to be.

  8. I would mainly write about my core identity. Because it helps everyone know who i am, my values, my personality, it also helps me find the social group that i belong to.

    1. Can you tell us a bit about your core identity? I think those details, like they did for Ali K., would help us to get a better understanding of why you would chose your chosen identity to mainly write about.

    2. I couldn't agree more with you that core identity is mainly identity we concerned with.
Like you have said that it's important to know our own personalities and values and let everyone know our. It boost relationship a lot with just know and understand we are, what they are, what they like or dislike and so on. Because of those advantage, we can live happily with people that live the same way with us and be able to survive with people with bias. Understanding each other's core identity not only boost relationship but also be able to reach what we called "love". Like teacher Peter said, I would like to know more about your opinion whether they will be in the idea as mine or not.

    4. You can say that again Linh. Core identity can help people know who you are and link to where you belong to. You can find your friends or places from your personality or style that you prefer or interested in. Let's give an example. In high school, I have a group of my friends who always support me and have the same aspect when we face the same problem which makes us easy to become friends. We respect and accept each other, including me. It makes me feel peaceful when I stay with them.
So, I think not only the core identity is unique that nobody likes you which made you special but it also can help you to find places and friends that make you feel happy and comfortable when you belong to.

    6. I mostly agree with your idea about core identity. In the same way, core identity is the most important identity for me because it shows who I am from inside, not just what I sometimes pretend to be. For instance, when I meet new friends, I appear to be very quiet but actually I'm not. I always talk a lot with my close friends or when I feel comfortable to talk. Also, other people can know my personality and character from core identity like you mentioned. However, I don't think that core identity can help someone find a social group. People usually attend a social group related to what they're interested in, such as a football team, so it's more likely to be chosen identity.

  9. First, I would like choose to talk about my core identity because I think it's the most important things that can explain who I truly am. I think environment can influence person to become a person such as family because they're the first group of people that live with you all the time.

    1. I agree with your opinion that core identity can express who you truly are. Core identity is something that are our behavior but like you have said that it can be changed and be able to gradually develop from stimulant or surrounding environment such as family, communities, and friends. If we live in good environment we obviously turn in to good person from whatever we are. For example, the boy who born in slum taught nothing from his parents. If that boy fostered by family that have good-trait parents did what parents said to do and followed the instructions he will grow up to me the gentleman for sure. On the contrary, if that boy still live in there, he might forced to be drug dealer reluctantly because of poverty.

    2. I agree with you too. Because core identity is means your truly persona. Nevertheless, people’s environment also play an important role to influence their life as you said above. But looking into the bright side, no matter a villain try to become bad as we saw in the movies they must change their mind and turn over a new leaf at last. You may try to change your lifestyle , your social groups or even your outlook but you can’t change your core identity.
