Response writing 1: fight-or-flight syndrome. Quest 2, p. 234, ex. A.

In her thinking ahead exercise to the general interest reading of chapter 8, Hartmann asks us to discuss some topics that are relevant to the reading "The New Science of Mind and Body" (2007, p. 234, ex. A). We are instead going to do this as a series of response writing exercises.

Response write on the following prompt:
  • 1. Imagine that you are walking alone down a dark street, late at night, in a bad neighbourhood. Nobody is around. Suddenly you hear footsteps behind you, and you are certain taht someone is going to attack you. At this point, you will probably experience the fight-or-flight syndrome. How does your fear affect your body? How do you react to your fear?

    1. This reminds me of the scene in the first Twilight film, where Edward saves Bella's life the first time, this time by preventing recklessly driven van that is skidding on the wet Fork's carpark in front of the local high school from crushing Bella.

Being a vampire, I'm not sure that Edward really experienced the fight-or-flight syndrome, but the sudden release of adrenalin, a lie in Edward's case (I'm sure vampires don't have adrenaline, or do they?), is his explanation for Bella of how he could so very, very quickly get from the other side of the carpark in time to display the amazing strength that stopped a van from squashing them both to death.

Bella, naturally, wanted an explanation, and she wasn't very convinced by Edward's story of adrenaline.

    2. Oh, it reminds me the green monster Hulk who transform into a big muscular guy when he faces dangerous situation. In the movie, he is the strongest man among the super heroes. I guess the injection he tested himself might have adrenaline as an important ingredients.
