Skillful 3: Reading and Writing, page 161 - Critical thinking

Critical thinking

In any academic course, critical thinking plays an important role, which is why Rogers and Zemach conclude every reading with a critical thinking activity. For critical thinking questions that conclude reading 1 of Unit 9, we did a quick brainstorming exercise on Classroom, and then expanded the second question question into a paragraph as a short academic writing exercise that gave us an opportunity to practice the steps of the writing process.

This time, we will do Rogers and Zemach's critical thinking exercises as three response writing exercises. (Yes, I know there are only two questions, but that's not a problem.)

The questions & some notes

Rogers and Zemach's questions are:

  1. How would communication change if modern technology no longer worked?

  2. Do you think that sound and technology should be considered a pollutant?
    Why or why not?

Notes & instructions

When you write, imagine yourself writing for a reader who has not seen the question you are answering. This means you will not number your answer. It means you have to paraphrase enough of the question in your first sentence that your reader is clear what you are talking about. This is especially important for a Yes/No question. You probably do not want to write "Yes" or "No,"

We will answer these two questions in two separate comments. First, plan for 3:00 minutes, then in the comment box below, write your answer for 6:00 minutes. You should be able to write about 100 to 150 words in one or two very short paragraphs.

For the second, more interesting question, you have 3:00 minutes to plan and then 5:00 minutes to write your one paragraph that states and supports your answer to the question. I suggest you start with a topic sentence that answers the question, and then write the supporting sentences for your yes or no answer. You will not, of course, write "Yes" or "No."

The third part of this critical thinking exercise is coming shortly.

  1. If modern technology no longer worked, communication would be far more difficult. Now, we are used to immediate communication with anyone anywhere in the world. For example, I can phone or chat with my brother in Australia easily at any time. Our class is another example of what modern technology makes possible. Without the technology of the internet, we could not have a video meet, we could not share presentations, which normally work well. As we noticed this morning, when the technology fails, it's a problem. Without the modern technology that makes things so quick, so easy and usually so reliable, we would have to return to the old ways of face-to-face classes, and writing letters to friends in other countries, then waiting weeks for a reply.

  2. The communication will change if modern technology no longer worked. A lot of things have to change. We need to figure out some new ways to communicate or maybe use the old ways that we used to do before these new technologies came out. For example, using mail or animals . We have to find new ways to communicate so we can keep communicate and invest for something new for us to communicate.

  3. Communication it is a very initial tool in many business nowadays. We have modern technology to helps us connect each other. If the modern technology disappear, it would cause us a lot of problems. Internet, for example, it is a significant tool that change the world of communication, such as an email, it helps communication go faster than writing a mail and send it via post office, which is time consuming and waste more money to send a mail than use an email to send your letter or message to other.

  4. In my opinion, I think if the modern technology has no longer it maybe difficult to communicate because it didn’t balanced. I think it will didnt have a new communication with easier than now.

  5. Although they bring many benefits, both sound and technology can also be pollutants. Sound pollution around my home on Silom, for example, is real problem. It's not too bad in my condo, but I have noticed over the last two months when the curfew stopped almost all traffic at night, and when there was very little daily traffic, that it was much quieter, and I enjoyed that extra peacefulness. Other examples of sound that make the environment worse, which is what pollution is, are the banging and other noises when people in my condo building are renovating. That's really annoying; the noise is definitely pollution, but even music can be a pollutant if it is making the environment worse, such as when people have a loud party that disrupts the neighbourhood.

I'm less sure that technology is really a pollutant. The internet is always there, but it can be ignored fairly easily. Or can it? If I'm reading, for example, and a student sends me an email, my phone pings to alert me, which can interfere with reading, especially if I read the email and reply to it. On the other hand, I can set my phone to "Do not disturb" mode, so that it makes no sounds except alarms that I've set. On the whole, I guess I would say that technology can be a pollutant, but most of the time, we can easily solve that pollution threat by turning off the technology.

  6. In my opinion, technology should be considered a pollutant. Most of the technology is harmful to the nature and it destroys the nature. Some of them are useful. For example, mobile phones and internet. But the technologies that are used in the factory can make the pollution. Some of the release the carbon dioxide to the air. For example, cars. These technologies create global warming and destroying the Earth.

  7. I didn’t think that sound and technology should be a pollutant. I think if we can control the sound in correctly, use the correctly technology, it will be fine to your own and the other. For example, use the computer to make a research of the work. The sound ut may be considered to a pollutant such as sound from the car on the traffic jam but I think we should follow the law; it will decrease a pollutant.

  8. Do you think that sound and technology should be considered a pollutant?
    Why or why not?
Environment pollution might be a biggest thing in our world but there are another things that can pollute our daily life like sound and technology. All three of them are human made but sound and technology also can affect not only with us but also other species. To beginning with sound pollution, such as a trading with cargo ship in the ocean route may cause problem to marine life, or people who live near an airport would receive noise pollution with out a way to escape. The next problem is technology such as telephone, Ipad, or computer. It is not healthy life for kid or teenager to stick with phone or Ipad all day with out going out and do any other physical activities.
