Banning junk food is appropriate?

The BBC article, “Leisure center ‘junk food’ alert”, makes me notice about increasing of junk food and imagine number of fat children in the present. I think about a problem and a solution that they offer about banning junk food, is it appropriate way?

In article report, British Heart Foundation (BTH) found that most of venues sports for children have a lot of fat food, instead of nutritional food. This situation makes children being risk of obesity. So BTH ask for council to reconsider a law to sport centers about provide nutritional food more, reduce fat food to make them have more option to buy healthy food. From the report, Peter Hollins said: "It's fantastic that these kids are getting fit and having fun at the same time but this is being undermined by venues peddling junk food at them" (¶ 9).

In my opinion, that is a good idea to reduce a chance of childhood obesity, a serious health problem in many countries in present. Although, it seems like a controversial topic, someone may argue that they have right to sell product in legal, the reasons of banning junk food is similar to banning alcohol and cigarette. First, junk foods are cause of health problem on many people in social. Another reason why they should strict selling fat food in child places because children are too innocent with eating or drinking. It is a good way to control and prohibit something that harms their life. Moreover, project will make relieve to parents because nobody want their child unhealthy and being risk of disease.

  1. I don't think that reasons of banning junk food are similar to banning alcohol or cigarette because junk food cannot make children addicted. It is true that junk foods may lead to obisity if they eat them too much. I think the government should educate about junk foods effect to parents and children on the TV program or the lessons at school. Banning junk food cannot change their behavior, unless they know the bad health problem.

  3. I agree with Pin that banning junk food is different from banning alcohol and drugs because junk foods don't cause children addict. Moreover, children who like to eat junk food don't cause any trouble to the society. Junk food just cause children unhealthy. On the contrary, children who addict to alcohol or drugs cause many problem. They may become to the criminal in the future. Moreover, I think banning junk food in sport center cannot solve the problem obesity in children because they still can buy them from other places if they want to eat them.

  4. I agree with you about controling and prohibiting something that harmful children's life. Banning junk food is one of the methods to protect them from obesity. I think all children have sufficient knowledge to decide what is advantages or disadvantages, but it is difficult to do. So, adults should advice and help them.

  5. I agree with kate that banning junk food is not the same as banning alcohols and drugs. Drugs can lead you to death, but junk food only makes you unhealthy. Moreover, people who take drugs can do serious mistakes because they lack of consciousness such as car accident which can do harm to your and other people's lives. However, eating junk food does not make any serious mistakes to yourselves and others.

  6. I'm inclined to agree with Tan that there are important similarities between junk food and drugs such as alcohol, marijuana, yaa baa and cigarettes. Both types of things are unhealthy. Both can cause personal and social problems. Both are addictive - I think that people can have addict-like behaviour towards food and excessive eating. Both drugs and fast food are fun and easy ways to a quick "high", and so on. These seem important similarities to me, which is why I thought that Tan's idea was a good one.
But I don't agree with Tan that junk foods should be banned near schools. As others have pointed out, just because something is unhealthy is not a good enough reason to ban it. It is not the government's job to tell children what they may or may not eat, that is properly the parents' role, and if parents do their job properly, their children will be able to eat resonably well. Some will certainly have problems, but it's wrong to punish everyone because some are bad. And it is wrong to punish adults and others near schools because some children's parents fail to teach healthy habits to their children.
Now comes the controversial bit: I agree with Tan that junk food is similar enough to alcohol and tobacco that they should be treated similarly; therefore, it must also be wrong to ban alcohol and tobacco from areas near schools for exactly the same reasons that it is wrong to ban junk foods.
