How does a number have an effect on people's life?

I saw this article about Chinese believe in lucky number 8 on the CNN, I thing it's interesting topic to think about this. From this article,I learned that number infuence Chinese people to do many things:for example, the opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games begin at 8:08:08 p.m. on 8/8/08, many people try to deliver their baby on 8/8/08, there are many couples have a plan to get a marraige on 8/8/08, and an airline pay a lot of money to get telephone number 8888-8888 because they believe in lucky number 8 which can make them have prosperity.

In Thailand, we believe in lucky number 9 that is linked to success and number 6 linked to failure. Do you think the number can affect on people's life?Do you have some experiences about lucky or unlucky number which affect your life? What is the lucky number in your country?

  1. The first thing that I thought of when I read Paully's post was that it another excellent example of cultural differences, and how important they can be. People take things like lucky numbers very seriously. Oddly, I don't think you even need to believe the numbers or other things are "lucky" to take them seriously. I don't believe in "lucky" numbers, but when I still chose my own mobile phone number carefully, and one of teh things I thought about was how other people would find it: I didn't 4 or 6s in my number, but 8 and 9 were both good. In Australia, 4 would have been fine. Some Australians think 7 is lucky, but I don't think most people care very much - they just want a number that is easy to remember.

  2. In Korea, we have no specific number which people preper or avoid. However, young generation tend to choose 7 and avoid 4,13.
I belive that culture is from western. If somebody ask me which number I like or dislike, I would say that there is no number. But when I looked for house, I didn't choose 4th floor even there is better condition. Moreover, on friday 13th day, I tend to avoid doing something important that day.
    Sounds strange.

  3. J is right, many western people do think the number 13 is unlucky, although I'm not sure how many take it very seriously. It's certainly well known enough to feature in movies and books, like the famous, and awful, The Da Vince Code. (I thought Dan Brown's story was fun, but his writing is painfully bad - the movie is better.)

  4. I agree that Thai believe 9 is a lucky number. They always do everything relate to number 9. For example, They compete to bid a car registration(9, 99, 999, 9999)in high cost, many people try to get a marraige on 9/09/yyyy at 9:09 AM.

I don't believe in the lucky number. I like number 1 and this number is not a lucky number. In my idea, I think all of number are good if you like. You will feel contetned when you do something relate to your number.

  5. I think number is important for believe' s people in along time ago. From my experience, I like number 3 because no reason, it's just my feeling in positive way of this number. But most people in Thailand like number 9 due to symbol of success, so some events or things which relate number always use number 9. Moreover, number depend on believe of people and culture of country. Nobody can decide what number is lucky or unlucky.

  6. As J said, in korea, we have no preference number. Although I have number I like but I have no reason like Gus. I just like it. Many people like number 7 becuase they believe 7 is lucky number and dislike 4 and 13. Korea is influenced from western culture a lot, so many korean also dislike 13, especially friday night in 13. Sometimes I wonder that friday night in 13, what happend? Sometimes I'm excited but sometimes I'm afraid a little. Also, it's difficult to find button or figure for fourth floor. Anyway i think, good number or bad number are decided according to their culture or belief.
