A regular habit
I do really love sleeping. I must say that I cannot make it through my whole day without getting some rest or taking a nap during the daytime. The best time for me to take a nap is in the afternoon. Specifically, I usually do it around two hours after finishing my lunch. My napping duration typically lasts no more than 30 minutes. However, it can sometimes be a little longer than that.
Much scientific research and studies suggest that having a fine and effective rest during the day is truly an energy boost which enables our brain and body to function better as a whole. And I absolutely agree with such discoveries. It is apparent that taking a nap allows me to be more productive at work as it can surprisingly erase all the stress and messy thoughts I have had during the day. My mind and brain are refreshed and therefore ready for any upcoming work or difficult challenges. There is a significant difference between having a nap and not having a nap in my daily life. I admit that I used to do it for experimental purposes. I notice that it is much easier for me to come up with some brilliant ideas or even figure out the problems or understand something more clearly if I have a short nap compared to a day without napping.
Getting my news
I usually keep myself updated with what is happening around the world or breaking news by spending much of my time surfing the internet. Due to the increasingly widespread availability of news websites and social media platforms in the modern world, it is quite easy for me to have full access to tons of information and news worldwide with a mere click on the mouse.
I am an active user of several popular social media applications such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram. Of these four platforms, I am leaning more towards Facebook, which is considered to be the largest social media platform with millions of users from different backgrounds. As a result, it is definitely a place where I can get a wide range of news from every corner of the world, ranging from politics to entertainment. The news featured on Facebook can come from multiple sources including individual users and official news agencies. I find Facebook pretty much useful as it is truly my personalized online newspaper. Specifically, it allows me to customize my News Feed and only opt for news of my interest. With this being said, I can rest assured that I am catching up on the latest news in which I am greatly interested in at both national and international levels.
Zemach's most useful strategy
Of Zemach’s five suggested strategies, being an independent learner is the most important strategy to achieve my goal of improving our capacity to communicate effectively in English. This is because, without independent learning or study, our knowledge and skills relating to English communication will only be limited to what we have learned or studied in the classroom or what our teacher has taught or provided to us. And there is no way for us to really master our communication skills.
I personally think that the scope of English learning should not be confined to classrooms. There are millions of English lessons out there in the real world that we can have. For example, if you want to practice reading and writing skills, you can find it useful to look at some English articles or news from online sources such as news websites (e.g, BBC, CNN) or even social media platforms (e.g, Facebook, Twitter) from which you can learn the structure of the sentences, and the use of the specific term in a sentence or grammatical aspects. And if you wish to improve your English listening and speaking skills, then you can do so with the help of social media applications, namely YouTube as there are many tutorial clips for English conversation and other video clips featuring interesting news and topics in which you might be interested. You will greatly benefit from learning English through YouTube by both knowing how to pronounce the words correctly and simply imitating the native speakers’ way of speaking.
For the reasons mentioned above, I strongly believe that independent learning is the most indispensable approach that could help you become proficient in English communication.
Thank you Pop. It's also one of my habits to take a short nap during the day. A good time for me to take a nap is the mid-afternoon. Twenty minutes is usually enough. If I nap for longer, it can actually make me feel sleepy still, and it messes up my sleep at night. But 20 minutes works well to refresh me for a bit more work, or reading, or whatever I'm going to do for the rest of the day.
