Skillful 4: Reading & Writing, page 68 - Before you read

What is it?

To start us thinking about the issues that are coming up in the next reading, "Risk-takers: Who are they?" Warwick and Rogers (2018) invite us to briefly describe an imagined risk taker.

Question

  • Imagine a typical risk-taker. Choose your topic. Get ideas on her or him. Write a brief description of the person. Your description should cover:
    • the person’s age,
    • character,
    • gender,
    • job,
    • and social life.

You have 12:00 minutes to plan and write your response to the question. I suggest you divide your time roughly as:

  • planning = 4:00 minutes (It's usually a good idea to plan before you start to write.)
  • writing = 6:00 minutes, and
  • editing = 2:00 minutes.

A helpful strategy

Beginning your introduction by telling us the name of your imagined risk taker forces you to be concrete, which generally makes for stronger, more effective examples.

  1. My friend Amnaj is a typical risk taker. He is 30 years old, but still acts like he's a teenager. In the years that I've known him, he has constantly changed jobs, working as a messenger, a motorcycle delivery rider, and most recently he has started a small stall selling food on the street, which seems a risky business to start during the Covid situation. But to be fair, his business seems to be doing well. Every day, he gets a bulk order from a nearby hospital for 50 boxes of his cooking. But I think he's very reckless the way he rides his motorcycle. I've let him take me places twice, but only when it's urgent I get their quickly. I'm surprized he has not had an accident, not even a serious one ,although he says he's come very close a few times. His risk-taking is reflected in his social life, although that seems a bit less risky these days. When I first met him more than ten years ago, he loved partying with friends and the partying often involved not only alcohol but other drugs, and there was a lot of risky sexual behaviour that went with that. These days, in contrast, he is in a settled relationship with the woman who is the mother of his child; I don't think he goes out partying at all these days, so perhaps with age, or changing responsibilities, he has become less of a risk taker in some ways.

  2. My friend, Cartoon, is a risk taker. He is 23 years old. We met when we were freshmen. He introduced himself first, which I thought that he was very friendly. When we were studying together, he usually made jokes and created good atmosphere. Now, He is working as an UI-UX designer in one of the software companies. He risks himself to work in a medium-sized company to learn from the seniors. He also has extra job as a freelance interface designer and is setting his start-up. He uses his money to initiate his start-up project, which I think it is very risky. We barely see each other nowadays because we are both busy with our work. I hope that he will succeed in the near future.

  3. My imagined risk taker's name is Pol. She is 60 years old. She is an introvert, independent person. She just retire so now her job is a trader. She do not have any kid, living with her husband in suburb of Bangkok. She has only two friends that still contacting with her. The reason why I think she is a risk-taker is that being a trader has a lot of risk to take. She can lose all of her money. As a result, she do not have money left to live.
