Skillful 4: Reading & Writing, page 68 - Before you read

What is it?

To start us thinking about the issues that are coming up in the next reading, "Risk-takers: Who are they?" Warwick and Rogers (2018) invite us to briefly describe an imagined risk taker.

Question

  • Imagine a typical risk-taker. Choose your topic. Get ideas on her or him. Write a brief description of the person. Your description should cover:
    • the person’s age,
    • character,
    • gender,
    • job,
    • and social life.

You have 12:00 minutes to plan and write your response to the question. I suggest you divide your time roughly as:

  • planning = 4:00 minutes (It's usually a good idea to plan before you start to write.)
  • writing = 6:00 minutes, and
  • editing = 2:00 minutes.

A helpful strategy

Beginning your introduction by telling us the name of your imagined risk taker forces you to be concrete, which generally makes for stronger, more effective examples.

  1. I would like to introduce my brother John, who is the black sheep in my family. Even when he was in primary school, he would get angry easily and shout back at teachers, and he would start fights with kids who were bigger than him. Now that he is in his 30s, and running his own business designing and making custom knives for people around the world, he still has little control of his emotions. I think it's just good luck that he has not thrown a knife at someone when he was angry.

About ten years ago, he met a wonderful woman who fell in love with him. Perhaps Lisa liked my brother's unpredictability and disregard for convention. I'm sure she did not like his addiction to drugs, although his addiction to risky acts, like car racing, might have been attractive. I think that John probably did love Lisa, but shortly after their beautiful daughter, Anne, was born, their relationship fell apart: always a risk in relationships between people who don't exactly follow social peer pressure. John seems to get on well with his customers and with acquaintances, but I think he has problems with closer relationships.

Sadly, his daughter seems to have inherited her father's fondness for taking risks. She has already broken her leg and suffered lots of cuts and bruises because of bike accidents. And at school, she is not afraid to get into fights, even with boys. Like my brother, my niece seems addicted to excitement, some of which is unhealthy. At least John's business risks have paid off well: he sells individual knives for thousands of dollars each to customers around the world.

  2. For me, a typical risker is a person who loves gambling. With is definition in my mind, I can describe them as gambler. They can be both female and male and they are rich enough to spend their times all day and all night at a casino. For them, money is not the main driver for them, but the fun of completing with luck is more important.

Although she has more leisure than others, she usually spends her freetimes on doing research and forcast the possibility of stock prices.

  4. I think about someone that affects our country so much. He is old and he’s still working. He must answer the question of what happened in thailand. What should we do in this situation? He has been working in his position for a very long time. I think If our economic condition is bad, he should do something. Now, the economic condition is not good, I think he is a risk-taker.

She is 23 years old and she is a very kind, friendly and polite person. Now, she is working at the bank in Thiland and on her freetime, she invest her money on stocks so, I think that she is a risk taker as well. Before the pandemic, she played a great deal of thrill rides in many countries such as, Taiwan and Japan. Finally, I want to be a person who have bravery same as her in the future.
