Killing is killing, nothing else.

My proposition statement for "The religion of Santeria allows animal sacrifice." is that animal sacrifice for religion purpose should not be banned ; for example Santeria ritual of killing a chicken as the way to communicate with spirit must be treated as a justified act.

Although these kind of acts are invading animals' lives, we have no right to criticize that the Santaria performs immoral act while we all are involve and accept animal life taking process in other way such as eating meat, using leather bag. Is it right to give an unfair evaluation on each reason for taking animal lives? Why our reasons are justified, but others are not? Why the killing act of KFC company is acceptable, but Santeria is evil? Between killing for the pleasure of chicken taste and the kill according to religion belief , considering the number of chicken being killed, which one caused more trouble to the chicken breed?

  1. I like the way Air explores how a general principle that one group might use to argue for a position on one issue must also apply to other issues, where the same people might not be so happy with what follows with logical certainty from their own principle.

    1. But I'm not so sure that I like reading the small, seriffed font. The blog's default font is a bit easier on my eyes, a compelling reason for my choice when I set up the blog.

    2. I'm sorry Peter. I've change the font already. I agree that it is easier to read. :)

    3. Thank you Air.
And I've replied to Sup's very constructive emailed questions.

  2. After I read your proposition, I disagree with you. But now I change my mind.

According to BBC: Religions, animal sacrifice in Santeria is as food. The way that they kill animal is similar to slaughter house, which have animal welfare, quickly death without torture. As the result, "The USA Supreme Court has stated that it is constitutional for Santeria worshippers to kill animals for such a ritual sacrifice".

So I disagree with you the first time because I think the animal sacrifice torture animals. But they do it for food like we do. So why we justice them that they force for evil; even though, they have a similar purpose to be food like us. If you think that, you are one of evil; that is, you are one of meat consumer to make a profit to slaughter.

    1. Thank you Mo for that link to some very relevant factual information. Facts might not be decisive in moral issues, which is what a proposition typically is, but they are certainly relevant, and we do need to get them right. If a moral position depends on some factual belief being true, then we should (a moral proposition?) be worried about whether or not that factual claim is in fact a fact. Mo has changed her opinion because her research uncovered (discovered) an important and highly relevant fact.

      Thank you Mo.

  3. Could we think about it deeper? Could we try to avoid pitfalls of group thinking by asking useful questions?

Have we ever killed big animals such as chickens by ourselves? I believe the answer is NO. What will we feel if we have to kill chicken? I am certainly confident that we cannot do so. Why cannot we kill it? Let us close our eyes and imagine how we feel if we have to do. Let us imagine chicken reactions; its wings and its voice. I believe we will get the answer for this question by ourselves because I believe we have minds, chickens also have minds, all animals have minds, so we understand other minds.

I agree that we must be fair when we express our opinions to situations, and I really thank you Air’s questions that lead me to carefully think about my eating habit. It maybe supports other people to steal animals’ life. Therefore, my proposition for this factual is that we should not support any actions in order to sacrifice animals’ life by all any ways including reducing meats consumption.

    1. I think we stand on the same side. I did not mean people are justified to killing more animals, but I want to encourage us to reconsider the true reason for banning the Santeria. Wheter the negative reaction of most people toward them is caused by their love for animal or just their unfair justice by thinking that the Santeria's reason for killing animal is nonsense and not equally important as their own reason which is for consuming. My hidden agenda is to remind ourselves that if we judge that the Santeria is cruel when we first read about their animal sacrificiing, we are not much different from them.

  4. Actually, when I carefully think about Air'proposition and do a research about it, I change my mind. But it doesn't mean I want to kill them.Although, I used to do it during studying Veterinary Science. Did it mean bad or wrong to do it for education? Yes, I was not happy with that. But I have learnt a lot to value animal lives and respected them as my teachers.

I agree with P'sup that we should respect animal right by reducing to consume meat or eat them properly.
