What I read
Referring to the The Economist News “Coca-Cola mulls cannabis drinks.” (2018) reports that, since it is not illegal
to use cannabis as an ingredient of food and beverage in some part of U.S., small
companies and startups have already added cannabis into their products. Some
are also experimenting it. Even a big corporate, like Coca-Cola, is considering
the trend of hashish consumption. However, there are 2 kinds of marijuana. One is cannabidiol, which is not
psychoactive. Used as a food supplement, cannabidiol also benefits to
people in both mental and physical health. Another is tetrahydrocannabinol. It
is used for alcohol-drink industry to create non-hangover and low-calorie
alcoholic drinks.
____________
My response
In the past, some
villagers in Northern Thailand was addicted to opium and their life quality became worse and worse. They was unable to
work and got poorer and poorer. Therefore, I cannot imagine what it
is going to be if people are allowed to consume products, contained
cannabis, legitimately. Although companies may claim that they use
just a little amount of cannabis, there is still a risk that people may get addicted
to marijuana. We can be sure that companies
will gain advantages from an increase in sale. However, apart
from helping consumers relief anxiety and pain, is there any drawbacks
from pot intake? This new product concept may drive business sector
forward. Nevertheless, which direction will it bring our country and our people
to, forward or backward?
In my opinion, if
today cannabis drinks are available at convenient stores, I will not try them.
I am afraid of getting addicted to cannabis as it is an addictive substance. Once I try them. I may want to
take more of them, in terms of dose and frequency. Moreover, delicious
dishes, healthy smoothies and other general products that used to make me
happy may not satisfy me anymore. This will definitely cause me a big trouble.
To conclude, marijuana may bring amazing joyfulness to us and a
huge profit to companies. There are still some disadvantages that
are worth to be concerned.

My question
Is it possible that products from marijuana
will be legally available in Thailand in the near future? And what do you
think about it?

If you've read my comment on Kieng's post above, you can guess my answer to Fern's question: of course marijuana should be legalized in Thailand, although I'm not sure that such a sensible approach will be followed. The problem is that making this addictive drug illegal is very good for two powerful groups in society: mafia gangs and corrupt officials, who naturally do not want any change to official policy that gives them a monopoly on a popular product, and so makes them extremely rich while harming everyone else in society. Exactly the same thing happened in the US when the drug alcohol was made illegal during the Prohibition era from 1920 to 1933. That was a great gift to the mafia in the US, who gained great wealth and political power as they corrupted the police, judges and politics, from which evil the US has never fully recovered.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, General Paiboon Koomchaya suggested decriminalizing the popular drug yaa baa when he was justice minister a couple of years ago, but naturally, he was quickly moved to different position before his reform could disrupt the supply of profits to mafia and corrupt officials. I thought that response to a man who respected evidence and good reason was a unhappy reflection of the ruling politicians. The government had a chance to make some reforms that would benefit Thai society by reducing drug harms, eradicating a major source of corruption, and making the law more moral; but they chose to reject it.
Also worth noting is that when alcohol was made illegal in the US, its use did not significantly drop, nor did it increase when legalized again 13 years later. The same is seen in US states that have legalized marijuana use in recent years: the use of the drug remains at about the same rate.
DeleteAs Fern says, she would not suddenly start using a drug just because it became legal, and the evidence suggests that most people feel the same way, so the worry that if some drug is made legal, more people will use appears to be a false belief that the facts contradict.
I support that marijuana should be legalized because I have read some article that talk about we can make a medicine by marijuana .But government should control it righteous way and warn citizen well enough that it legalized only in hands of medical staff .
