Welcome to RW3B and to our class blog

What we read

This post isn't really about what I've read, although I have been reading in preparation for your class. Rather, this post is to welcome you to our class blog.

But since we discussing the title of this section is "What we read," it will help to have read something, so if you have not already, spend a couple of minutes reading series consultant Dorothy Zemach's Foreword on page 4 of Skillful Reading & Writing 4.

My response

Thank you for joining our Saturday class in Reading and Writing for academic purposes. I hope you find the next six weeks useful, productive, also challenging, and perhaps even fun.

My question

In her foreword to students on page 4, the series editor, Dorothy E. Zemach, gives some strategies for successful learning, one of which is to "be an independent learner" (Boyle & Warwick, 2014). This class blog is one way for us to do this. As Zemach advises in her comments, it helps you learn to "find and then share information about ... different topics."

Some of the topics you will write about here are the unit topics, but I also like Zemach's suggestion that "reading for pleasure and using the Internet in English" are important, so your writing here will not be limited to the topics of the units that we study over the next six weeks.

Do you agree with Zemach and myself? Is a class blog a useful addition to our class this term? (This is two sentences, but it's only one question for you to respond to.)

You can respond as soon as you accept the invitation I will soon send you to join this blog.

  1. I agree. It's a useful addition to our class. I prefer it to study only from text book.

    1. Yeah, that's right. I think studying only in text book limits your imagination and also your present information.

    2. I like Jean's idea here. In this class especially, it's important for us to practice what we read about in the book, and that means writing, preferably in a realistic form that is similar to what is done in an academic context. And as with most skills, writing improves with practice. You would not expect to learn to be a great golfer or cook by reading books about cooking and golfing; neither do people become strong writers just by reading about writing.

  3. In fact, I think that a class blog is a useful addition to our class for other reasons as well. In universities today, it is common for a class to have an online discussion board where students are expected to discuss issues that arise in class, so our blog is also a realistic reflection of what is done at universities today.

The way we will use it also helps with some of the exercises in Boyle and Warwick, in addition to giving us an opportunity to practice a range of writing styles that are used at university.

    1. I agree with what you have written. The internet makes students process their work faster and more efficient than the traditional way.

    2. I rarely put a comment online when I disagree with any topics especially when in English and in more serious and critical topic. I hope this class could help me gain more confident!

  4. I do agree, because we can share the information that we want independently with our classmates and if there're someone who have the same interest, we're able to discuss about it together.

    1. I like your attitude. Sometimes I try things that don't work out that well, but the only only way to find out which work and which don't is to try them. I hope you have a positive assessment in six weeks.

  7. I don't think that being an independent learner means a student should have/join a class blog. Being an independent learner is when a learner improve the skills they seek to acquire creatively. But nowadays, the world has recieved a huge influence from the internet. It is a good idea that students join class blogs.

    2. On my point of view, independent learners are the one who're eager to learn by themselves without motivation from others. Even we are an independent learner, we could share aspects to one another. :)))

  8. I partly agree to what she had written. The independent learner doesn't have to study outside of the class, in the class they are capable of doing that too. Referring when we are studying anything, we can be inspired by materials in class and think out of the box and discuss with your tutors or friends.

  10. Yes, I agree with her opinion. Reading a lot of various articles can help the writers get more ideas to prepare a their drafts. additionally, reading can lead the writers easily to create a lot of information. Fact or Real?
