Sprawl: before reading "Solving the Problem of Informal Settlements" (SkRW4, p48)

Before we read

Before we read their chosen text on the topic of each unit, Boyle and Warwick invite us to activate our own thinking on the coming ideas by responding to a few questions.

Boyle and Warwick's questions

Look at the picture below and answer the questions in a comment.
  • Why do people live in informal settlements like this? Think of three reasons.

  • What do you think life is like for them? What reasons can you give for this?

  • What name is given to informal settlements like this and the people who live in them in your language? Do you know any other names for them in English?

      - Not a good quality of life. The reason is the fast growing of the city that efftecs living inequality.
      - It's call สลัม in Thai which the pronounciation is the same with the word in English; slum

  4. The reason why they living in these kind of environment are; 1.they don't have choices to choose their life quality due to their monthly wedge or non. 2.Once you adjust yourself to the new environment, you'll just get use to it. 3. They have no serious intention of working to upgrade their quality of living.
I am thinking, they would think that they life is so tough and very difficult to alive because there is no opportunity for them or else they have no aspiration of living in better place.

  5. -1.The people don't have enough money to buy some place for living in the city.
2.The goverment don't support all this people.
3.I think, they move from another country and they don't know where they should live.
-Their life is not comfortable because they don't have an electric for using in their house.

  6. In the question 1, one can see the community like the picture in Bangkok. People lived in the informal houses because 1) they do not have the legal rights of land or house, 2) they do not have much money to build a permanent building and 3) they might be the migrant workers from other countries.
The question 2, I think they do not have a good quality of life because they do not have money, land and sometimes they may be alien people.
The question 3, Thai people usually called "Sa-lum", it means non-permanent communities with low quality of life.

  7. -There are many people in this world who live in informal settlement because of poverty. Poverty makes human find their ways to survive. For example, migrating to a more developed country to find a new opportunity.
-In my own opinion, I think life is quite difficult for them for the reason that they have to live in poverty which usually means they lack basic facilities and their own rights.
-From my own little experience of seeing these kinds of neighborhoods, I would call these "slums" in my language (Thai). In English, I think they're called slums too.

  8. -The reason why people settle informally are
    1. They're poor, ain't have enough money to buy their own.
    2. They have no rights to own their property in case of illegal alien people.
    3. They were born there and knew just only to live there.

-Their life might be hard and tough because they can't do anything properly e.g. taking shower because they might not
    their own rest room.
    - Slum is the given name for the informal settlement. and Slumdog is for the people who live there .

  9. People stay in informal settlements like this because they may migrate from another country to work so they don't have their own house or even the right to own some. Another possible reason is that they may have to work in a non-permanent location. It means that they have to relocate to different places while they are working and it is easier and more time saving if they stay in this kind a accommodation. The third reason is that they may be the poor who cannot afford houses, therefore they have to build their own house like this.

I cannot imagine what life will be like in this lifestyle. Although I get some ideas about people who live in informal settlements in cartoon version, I still cannot say that I really know about them.

However, I think Thais call them the slam, the homeless or the poor.
