Discussion. 2: disease transmission. Quest 2, "Drug Use and Abuse Worldwide"

Hartmann’s reading in Part 2 of Chapter 7, “Drug Use and Abuse Worldwide” (2007, pp. 203 - 211) discusses several addictive substances and their use in several countries. Before we read it, we want to see what ideas we already have so that we can check them as we read the text. This is the purpose of the prediction making exercise C. on page 204, which we are doing here.

Response write on the following question:
  • 2. How does the use of drugs contribute to the transmission of disease from one person to another?

  1. The most obvious way, I think, that drug use can contribute to the spread of disease is by people injecting drugs and sharing their needles. This is likely to lead to the transmission of HIV and other diseases. Of course, if the drugs were legal, addicts would be more likely to buy and use new needles, which would reduce this harmful effect on citizens and society.

But disease transmission can also be increased by the effects of drugs. If someone is using a psychoactive drug such as alcohol, they are more likely to engage in other risky behaviour, such as unprotected sex, and this can spread disease.

  3. The use of drugs can contribute some disease to the others. For example, using the injection can transfer the disease by needle. If someone using the drugs and they have some disease it can cause whoever that use the same needle.

  4. Injection is one of disease transmission because when people do a drugs injection together like use the same needle to inject, sometimes that needle got some blood, which has disease such as HIV or hepatitis B. Next, other people use same needle and that blood gets into blood flow of other people.

  5. I think using drug can transmit the disease because when they inject drug to their bodies, they might use the same equipment, so the blood from the person who has disease will get into others bodies. Or they might use the equipment which is not clean and have bacteria or virus and it will cause disease.

  7. The use of drugs is one cause of the transmission of disease because some approach of using drug like an injection can make the abusers get the blood from other from the same tool.

  8. As we have many ways to take the drugs, disease can transmit from one person to another person by several patterns. HIV, for example, can be transmitted by co-using the injection needle.
