Discussion. 4: most commonly used. Quest 2, "Drug Use and Abuse Worldwide"

Hartmann’s reading in Part 2 of Chapter 7, “Drug Use and Abuse Worldwide” (2007, pp. 203 - 211) discusses several addictive substances and their use in several countries. Before we read it, we want to see what ideas we already have so that we can check them as we read the text. This is the purpose of the prediction making exercise C. on page 204, which we are doing here.

Response write on the following question:
  • 4. What is the most widely used psychoactive drug? What is the second most widely used one?

    1. I'm pretty sure this is wrong, but I might be wrong. I would agree with Alston in his comment below that the most commonly used psychoactive drug is tobacco, or perhaps alcohol.

In Australia, it probably used to be tobacco - most adults used to smoke when I was a child - but these days, smoking is in decline, so I guess that alcohol is the number one drug used in Australia, and most other Western countries. It's cheap, legal and deadly. And it's part of many cultural traditions and customs.

  3. I think The most widely used psychoactive drug is cocaine because its affect is desired by the teenagers who like to chill out with their friend and its price is not too expensive. The second is weed because it's easy to find in some country.

    1. I would have thought cocaine use was not so popular. I think it's expensive, so maybe it's a popular drug of choice amongst hi-so type kids. I do remember that it was popular at office parties with businessmen and the like in Australia years ago. I don't know if it still is. But it used to be too expensive for most people in Australia to regularly use cocaine.

    2. After I profoundly consider I agree with you. So I've changed my answer from cocaine to weeds because some country allow their people grow their own weed for use and the way to take is so easy like smoking cigarette.

  4. I do not have a lot of knowledge about psychoactive drugs but I think the most widely used psychoactive drug might be the one that make people have more energy and need less sleep because people want to make money, so they have to work hard and using these drug can help them work harder. For the second most widely used drug might be used to make people feel happy and forget their problems. Some problems are too serious to handle, so people use these drugs just to forget them.

    1. I think that business people in Australia who favoured cocaine think this way - it's supposed to keep people awake and alert as well as being a fun party drug, so is the drug I usually think of business people and professionals using, apart from alcohol, which almost everyone seems to use.

    2. I totally agree with Wan. As you can see one of the biggest problems in Thailand, some people want to earn money by selling illegal drugs, opium and Ya-Ba (Thai language), because the economic is getting worse and everything is too expensive. As the consequence, people can't stand to live here by getting low income and they want to find another way how to increase money quickly with impatient.

  6. Unlike her previous question, the one about adolescent drug use, I do agree with Hartmann's expected answer to this one, although I would also like to add at least one more sentence to fill out the answer.

When we check in class tomorrow, you are welcome to use more than one sentence to state your answers to this and the other questions.
