Response writing 1: Take babies from FAS babies? Quest 2, p. 218, ex. F.

In her concluding exercise to the three reading parts of chapter 7, Hartmann asks us to do some response writing on different topics that the previous readings have discussed (2007, p. 218, ex. F).

Response write on the following question:
  • 1. Should FAS babies be taken away from their mothers? Why or why not?

  1. I think they should not take babies from their mothers although the babies got FAS because it's morally wrong.

    1. I agree with you, and no matter the mother addicting step is, a baby should be with his/her mother. In case that mother maybe injure a baby, father or family must make sure that a baby is going to be safe and sound. I do believe that a pure baby can make change to alcoholic mother more or less.

  2. I think if their mothers have severe problem, like tend to injure them or kill them, in this case, the babies should be taken away but if their mother can control themselves, it is fine to let them look after their own babies. Even though mothers are alcoholism, i believe that most of them still loves their babies. If the babies live with someone else, they might not take good care of them. This might cause social problems in the future.

    1. I do believe that every mother who is alcoholism has no right to look after her child because, even for herself, she can't take care of, then her baby who was born while her mother continues drinking indicating that she doesn't care its health.

  3. I think the answer for this question it depends on the manner of mother after they born the FAS baby. If the mothers realize that they must change their manner about drinking alcohol, we should let them take care their baby. However, if they still drink a lot after she born the baby, we should take the baby away form them since they may not take care their baby in the right way.

  4. yes, but not for a long time. After mothers finish reducing from alcohol, babies should go back to live with their mothers. I believe that no one can take care babies better than their mothers. However, mothers must not drink alcohol again.

    1. I agree that the babies should be taken care by others when their mothers still drink a lot of alcohol and they should return to their mothers after they get better. But I disagree that the mother must not drink alcohol again because drinking just a little amount of alcohol does not have a serious effect to anyone. I think it is fine for them to drink but not too much.

    2. What if mother cannot quite from drinking alcohol? Then, alcoholic mother could not look after her baby? I think alcoholic mother should look after her baby herself, for building bond and attachment between mother and a baby maybe can change mother habits more or less, or at least she can see what effects she does to an innocent baby. What she can response for this? or maybe she doesn't get anything.

  5. In my opinion, mothers should accept their babies as FAS because they drank alcohol during pregnancy. If they take these kids away, it should be morally wrong decision!

  6. Some good comments here, with a variety of thoughtful responses to Hartmann's question.

This is close to one of Hartmann's possible essay questions to answer on page 224. Although that question focuses more narrowly on the pregnancy, a good answer could still be a proposition for what to do after the birth. My own proposition answering Hartmann's question also suggests what should be done during the pregnancy.

  7. It depends on how much their mothers are addicted alcohol, if babies are taken from the mothers, who will take them. and how you know that the person who takes the babies will be better than their mothers.

    1. I agree with you that an alcoholic mother doesn't mean she bad at taking care of the baby, in case of mafia parent in movies, they do illegal things, but they still love their kids. :-)
