The place for elder people

Problem about Elder people happens in many countries in the word. Older peoples have to has more careful about their health and the environment around them than younger people. By this cause, many counties make a good supporting and helping to elder people in many ways, but which country is the best place for elder people living?

According to "Sweden ranked first for treatment of elderly in UN report" in the BBC World(2013), The Global AgeWatch Index says that Sweden is the best place for elder people to live and Afghanistan is the worst. They use 13 difference indicators such as, employment, health, and education to indicate ranking.

Elder people problem is a big problem in the world. As days go by, older people is more increasing and Many government try to solve the problem but seldom country can fix it because fixing this problem, they have to use a lot of budget and a very good plan to make a great system supporting older people. In Thailand, government also can not solve this problem. For long time, Thai people does not think about this problem too much because Thai economic system is capitalism which everyone want to gain only profit and does not care about social welfare. People who does not have enough potential become unemployed and some lineage does not take care of their parent or ancestor when their parent has lose their capability and have no work. In addition, Thai environment is not good to support and help elder people, health, mental health, comfort. The government just pay 600 baht per mount to older people and it is not enough for living. Consequently, Thai government have to solve and reduce the problem as fast as they can, because elder people problem is going to be a serious problem in the future.

  1. I also saw this article on the BBC News so am glad that Ong decided to blog it, but what interested me more is the comment he made about capitalism. Ong writes that in the capitalist economic system "everyone want to gain only profit and does not care about social welfare." I wonder if others agree with this?

If this is true of capitalism, under what economic system do people care about social welfare?

There is also an interesting question about which type of economic system is more just, is morally preferable to the others and why, but perhaps Ong's factual point is easier to start with.

  2. Ong also writes that "Thai government have to solve and reduce the problem as fast as they can."

But why should the government do anything? Why shouldn't citizens be responsible for their own lives and those of others?

If you agree that for some reason the government should act, what do you think it should actually do? Should it, for example, encourage voluntary euthanasia to reduce the burden of old and useless people on society?

Is being a burden on society a good reason to seek to limit something? And I think that there is a connection here with the topic of drugs, especially recreational drugs such as wine, beer and yaa baa, which many people also see as being burdens on society.

    1. I think this problem should be fixed by citizens not the government. I think taking care of their parents is the duty of the offspring. The government might give some help but not too much because there are many problems which are more serious.

  3. In my opinion, control market system (communist) seem to has more fairly provide social welfare to their population; however, it's obviously to see that those social welfare have low quality. In Thailand, I think Mixed economic system is more suitable to describe about Thailand economic system, and I agree with Ong that Thai government provide a social welfare not as good as it should be. I love the idea of welfare state of Norwegian countries which is progressive tax and people can get a great social welfare, but I cannot handle with high tax even though I know that my tax can help poorer people to get a better life, but single tax is not include there, and I'm happy to know that it's just a rumor.
