Bixby and Scanlon introduce each unit with a discussion activity, that is, an opportunity for us to share our ideas on the topic of the unit in a way that relates it to our own lives, ideas and experiences. Unit 7 of book 3 (Bixby & Scanlon, 2013, p.77) does this.

My response
Research by academics solidly shows that brainstorming or discussion activities for groups are more effective if participants start by working individually (O'Connell, 2010; Markman, 2017). In fact, experts at Harvard University's School of Management and elsewhere are sure that this can be very effectively done using online tools (Chamorro-Premuzic, 2015). Blogging is one effective way to do this, which is the reason I've turned Bixby and Scanlon's discussion exercise into a quick blogging discussion.

Bixby and Scanlon's questions
Saying 1
"The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win." (Roger Bannister, The Four Minute Mile, 1955)
Saying 2
"Everybody is born with an equal chance to become as unequal as he or she possibly can." (Anonymous, n.d. (no date))Discuss these questions in a comment.
- Explain the meaning of each saying in your own words.
- Do you agree with each quotation?
- Why or why not?
Write full sentences. You will also need to write a few sentences for each of your ideas, giving explanation, examples and other details to clarify and develop your ideas.
You can address the questions in any order. You can write one comment, or if you prefer, two comments, but not three. So that you don't worry about Bixby and Scanlon's numbers too much, I replaced them with bullets.
You have eight minutes. Aim to write two or more paragraphs.

I totally agree with both quotations because the way to accomplish is not simple. Everybody has to put lots of effort to appoach that destination, and the most improtant thing they should have is strong mind to drive themselves along the way. Finally, the end of the way would be a beautiful memory and successful result.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion "The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win." means "No pains, No gains".If you don't try to do something, you won't get it.I agree with this quotation because it is real that if you don't try to do something, you won't get it.
ReplyDeleteI think that "Everybody is born with an equal chance to become just as unequal as he or she possibly can." means everybody have an equal chance to be odd if you can.
For the first quotation, It's mean that if someone never give up on their task, they will achieve their goal in someday.
ReplyDeleteThe second quotation means that everyone is born naked with bare hands and then gathering stuffs later on their life. In my opinion, I totally disagree with this quotation, since they are born in different places and time, and also in different families and countries. They are totally unequal since the day they were born.

ReplyDeleteThere is a quote saying that "The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win". In my opinion, I agree with this quote because all of the mistakes which make you feel painful will teach people. They will learn from it.
ReplyDeleteFor another quote saying that "Everybody is born with an equal chance to become as unequal as he or she possibly can". I agree with this since people can choose to be whatever they want to be. Every person will have their own life to be different.
But how children starving in Ethiopia have an equal chance compare to the ones who were born in rich family in developed countries ?
DeleteIn my opinion, meaning of this quotation is the man who success in something will be get more pain or experience than another man. I agree with this quotation because if you want to success something in your life you have you get through everything then you will success.
ReplyDeleteEverybody is born with an equal but if you want to become unequal you have to do something different.
I don't agree with this quotation because I think everyone is not born with an equal.
This sounds like First's idea about the meaning of the saying that "Everybody is born with an equal chance to become as unequal as he or she possibly can," but I thought it meant something a bit different. I don't think it says everyone is born equal in all ways, but only that we are born equal in one way.
