Skillful 3: Reading and Writing, page 12 - Critical thinking, q.1 = rivalries

Skillful 3: Reading & Writing, p. 6
Summary

In her "Introduction to the Student" on page 6, author Dorothy Zemach twice uses the adverb critically, reminding us that, in both academic work at university as well as in tests such as IELTS and TOEFL, critical thinking skills are important. Each unit of Skillful, accordingly, has critical thinking exercises that invite us to expand on issues raised in the readings and relate them to our own life experiences.

In section 3 of the reading on page 11, "Dangers of Social Identity," the article introduces the idea of rivalry (Rogers & Zemach, 2018).

Response

There are two reasons for doing Rogers and Zemach's critical thinking exercises as blog discussions. First, there is solid evidence that putting ideas in writing, especially online, improves the quality and variety of ideas since each person can formulate and write down their ideas independently, so that a single strong personality does not dominate the group and thereby suppress ideas that we want to get (Chamorro-Premuzic, 2015; Markman, 2017; O'Connell, 2010). Second, this is a reading and writing class, so it's sensible to practice putting our ideas down quickly in writing, which also gives us a chance to review them before publishing for others to read and respond to.

Note: my cited sources on the value of independent and online brainstorming, which I think also apply to our critical thinking exercises, are all from the Harvard Business Review. Don't read them now, but if you are interested in following them up, the full reference citations, including the links to each, are in the list of references below.

Question 1

In their first critical thinking question following the reading "Social Identity", Rogers and Zemach ask us to respond to the question:
"What are some benefits of rivalry? What are some problems?
Give specific examples." (Rogers & Zemach, 2018, p. 12)
Think for a minute or two, making some quick notes if you like; then in a comment below, write a short paragraph or two to tell us your ideas in response to this question.

  1. My first idea is that rivalry is natural. It's how nature works: from abour four billion years ago when life began on Earth, everything living thing today is a relative of every other living thing no matter how different because of rivalry. Living things compete for resources, and the most fit for a particular environment is the one that wins to reproduce, with any small changes eventually leading to small species. At the moment, our species is doing very well, and the new corona virus is doing very well in the environment we created for it. But if the climate changes, our rivals the cockroaches, or the fish, might to much better than us in the changed environment.

My next idea came from my smartphone, which I love. A few years ago, the services were far more limited, and the camera was not very good, but my current Samsung phone takes photographs that are better than my old SLR cameras used to take, and the latest Samsung Galaxy S20 has an amazing camera. This rapid evolution in smartphones and other technology is because of the healthy rivalry between tech, companies. That rivalry is very good for society.

DIadvantages of rivalry? I guess that religious wars, nationalistic wars, and the like are all disadvantages of rivalry. When one group thinks their superstitions or their national ideology is better than someone elses, that can lead to violence, suppression of human rights, and other traditional evil in society.

  2. The benefits of rivalry is to encourage people to work hard and improve themselves to be better among the other. Somebody work better if they had in the competition stage because the competition stimulate them to go beyond their actual stage. However, the rivalry can cause problem among the group since competitions can break unite feeling in the group because every one want to be the top or the chosen one.

For the benefits of revelries are to motivate people to develop themselves for competition because almost people want to win. Moreover, rivalries make people tend to be more engage to their work and their organization because they have to have a good teamwork.

For the problems of rivalries are to make stress for other other team and may be make you lost profit.

  6. Rivalries can encourage some people to work harder. About the word competition there always be the contenders that you must confront to. So, if you want to beat them, then you have to work harder to be better than all of your opponents. However, rivalries can get a lot of pressure to you. That can make you feel depressed frustrated and fail in the end.

  7. I believe that rivalry provide both positive aspects and drawbacks. First of all, it can be a good incentive which motivates people to better performance. For example, many children tend to focus on their classrooms under some competitive games. On the other hand, discrimination in our society is a one of it result.

  8. Rivalry of social identity, sometimes, can reveal both benefits and problems, for instance, the rivalry between political supporters. It is obvious that this difference identity might leads to a social problem by dividing people into many groups. However, if we cast aside the conflict, it is possible to see the true identity of the community issues.

  9. Being rival has benefit to the world of commercial trade and world innovation. When brands try to sell their products or services, they expects to have the most margin in the market, including to be the best choice of customer. Therefore, they try to seek the best way to present new products or services for customers. For example, McDonald and Burger king always have new menus for us. However, it could bring argument between companies and scandal.

    1. that sounds very similar to my idea, but I like the very different examples and perspective that you give. I don't like McDonalds or Burger King very much, but they are great examples. If I had to choose, I would opt ofr Burger King, which I think has a bit more taste, but as Mae says, the rivalry keeps both working hard to improve. This is why governments should encourage lots of competing companies, and not allow one or two to monopolize a market.

  10. Benefit of rivalries is it helps you to understand other people opinion and it will give you more than one point of view to see and think about think. I think that seeing thing from more than one point of view is important because when you look at things differently, you might see things that you have never seen before, and this is not only about opinions but other things as well. On the other hand, rivalries can cause problem as well. If individuals or groups of people have an argument and they let their emotion takeover, it might cause an intense situation that can lead to a bad result instead of an argument with reason.
