Child live Yemeni plan accident

Actually, this is a bad news about plane crash because a lot of peole have been dead in the accident. The news come from Yahoo and the title is "Child surive the Yemeni plan crash"(31,June 2009). When I look this news in Yahoo website, my heart was so badly because a lot of passengers have been dead when took Airbus A310 that was include three babies and eleven crew.Luckily, the boy live right now but I am not sure which the country about the boy. According to the article, "It is the second tragedy in recent weeks for France after an Air France Airbus A330-200 crashed into the Atlantic off the coast of Brazil on June 1, killing all 228 people on board." So when the same accident happened another time. At first time, you can speak it was a weather problem. But I want to know what is the most imporant reason.Actually, this is a very imporant queation because the Airbus need to find the key problem. In order to you can very quickly solve this problem. Most importantly, every passenger just have one life in the world. In my opinion, every passenger never want to pay a lot of money to travell just for dead. Finally, I hope the France Airbus don't have any accident in the future beacuse this is a basic responsibility about life.

Fruit Buffet

In evening, I saw an interesting article on Bangkok Post. The title of an article is Fruit Buffet. It have this convent in Chantaburi province. The time that you can enjoy a fruits buffet is on April to July every year. You just pay a little fee to enter the fruit gardens and take every fruits you want such as rambutan durian mangosteen.
I like this article because it's a good way to sell a products. Nowadays many kind of fruit can't sell on market, because it's too much. So this's a good way to advertising a famous fruits. and when you have a change to travel in Chantaburi, you should to to many destinations such as a nice beach or waterfalls.

Yesterday, I saw interesting article on BBC News. The title is "Canadian seal hunt 'collapsing' "(2009). I thought it was interesting because it a good news for protect seal.Every year seals were killed about 100,000 it is very high number of seal . The decline in number of seal products in market and EU ban seal products . I think when global market requirement was decrease seal hunt was decrease too. It make hunting unemployed and beginning in end of old practice but it a good for protect seal from cruel hunt.

Game boys addict

Atnoon, I saw this interesting article in Bangkok Post News. The title is "Game boys lost in online world" (2009). I though it was interesting because this is phenomenon ploblem for young people who is growing up. According to the National institue for Child and Family Development (NICFD), under Mahidol University, which study on this issue last year, a young people under age twenty are large group whose addicted to the computer games. Even though, the government has set many conditions to solve this ploblem but it stills happen because that conditions are not strictly regulation.

I think this ploblem is interesting with every person who have kids. Many parents try to avoid their kids away from vedeo games and internet cafe. It seems common ploblem has happening in thai socity but it can become a big ploblem in the future because the child can become hyperactive and unsocial able.

Nasa Mission to Survey Moon for Return of Astronauts.

Last night, I read an interesting article on the Voa news. The title is "Nasa Mission to Survey Moon for Return of Astronauts" (2009). It is about Nasa plans to bring the astronauts to return the moon’s surface by 2020. This plan aims to map new landing sites and search for some water and other potential resources. I thought it was interesting because this mission will make us know the answer of the question. Is there some water on the moon, isn’t there? In the history Apollo 11 used to put on the moon but it left the qustion unanswered for us.

I think that it will be very exciting, if the moon has some water. That is the great discovery in science circle. I believe that our life style will be change. Human dreams to immigrate to the moon and it may become true in the future soon. So, I am looking forward to be the part of history by 2020 in the same as 40 years ago Apollo 11 used to make.

A Pleasant Denouement at Luang Prabang.

Two days ago, I read a nice story on the Weekend. It was a free coppy that I took from my school at the AUA. The title is "A Pleasant Denouement at Luang prabang" (2009). It was a really good story about how a beautiful of Luang Prabang. I though it was useful for people who love travel. I like travelling. Every trip I always learnt new things. I have done many trip around Thailand such as our tourist area, with my family and friends. we are always seeking for a new place where we can travel again. Luang Prabang is a city located in north central Laos. It is a peachful city, with a population of about 103,000. In the story, There are lots of beautiful pictures. where are popular areas, Such as Royal Palace,Laos National Museum,Falls and Temples.

Laos is very close to Thailand. I think we have a similar culture, but Thailand is more modern than Laos. People in Loas are still keep their life with the nationral. It is not cost me alot to visit Luang Prabang. Because It is close to my home town. Travelling allows me to see things diferent. I will think about Luang Prabang for my next trip sure.

Rafal Nadal decide rest in wimbledon

Saturday, June 17, 2009
Yesterday, I read an unexciting article on the Yahoo News. The title is "Wimbledon - Nadal pulls out of Wimbledon" (Euro sport - Fri, 19 Jun 21:48:00 2009 ) I thought it was uninteresting news because I am Rafael fans. So, This is a bad news because I hope he will defeat Roger in Wimbledon 2009 years but everything can not come because Nadal can not join the Wimbledon game,so I think Roger will be win the Wimbledon Championship for his fifteen title in the Grand Slam.Actually,he also didn't want to left because he speak "Not to play Wimbledon is one of the toughest decisions in my career but the decision was made easier because I don't feel ready to compete at 100 percent for two weeks," said Nadal. When he has been decided left,it is so sadly for my heart because I liked he play teens style that was very overbearing, but he have to chose left because he has a knee hurt it was very serious, so this was described about he's hurt "I was making an effort to play week after week ... but I have two oedema (swelling of the knee joint), one in each knee... and now I'm going to be out. I don't know what time, how long. So, I hope he will be very well in the future because I like to watch Rafael Nadal play tennis.

Rats show that Thai law should be changed

Yesterday, I saw an interesting article on the BBC News. The title is "Rats play odds in gambling task" (2009). I thought it was interesting because it shows how gambling problems in people can be caused by brain chemistry. The researchers did experiments using rats. They learnt that rats gamble the same way as humans. Some rats gamble sensibly and don't have a problem, but others gamble badly and have serious problems. They found that the different rat behaviour is caused by the chemicals in the brain, and when they change the chemicals, the rats' behaviour also changes.
I think this research is important because it helps us understand people who have problems with gambling. It might also help us to treat people with gambling problems by fixing the problems in their brains. That would be better than making gambling illegal. Most people who gamble, like most rats, do not have a problem, so the law that makes gambling illegal in Thailand is a bad law. It punishes everyone, but actually, only a few people have a problem, and the law that makes gambling illegal does not help the people who do have problems! That is not a good law, it is an unjust law.

What do i read?

I read around few books per week. I like to read a history books, novels, short story, some magazines and articles in newspaper. My favourites books is Three kingdoms a chinese novel history books. All quiet on the western front a book about WWI. Petprauma thai book, a journey of group of people. My favourite magazines is National Geographic, Reader's digest, tuai toon a magazine full of story of history and tales around the world. Rhythm Section a magazines of people who interest in music. I read a books and magazines in Thai but except for sometimes i like to read about travel magazine in English version on Sawasdee. And some history text book also. I love to read many things because I'm grauated in History major and I likes to find many knowledge to develope myself too.

What do I read?

I usually read accounting standard and taxtion books for my work. Its important for my career for concern about the rules to make some financial statement. I always read thai news from news online such as Thairat and Daili news after that I will discover some interesting news from english news for example Bangkok Post and Student Weakly for practice. I like to read magazine about home decorating such as Bann & Suan and Home Decorated. Its can help me to furnishing my home and get the ideas for decorate in the new trend. I always spend my free time at furniture mall and home decorated mall for choosing my furniture. Nomally I don't like to read gossip star magazine but I can not avoide some curcumstace.

What do you read?

I often read everyday. I read many textbook about financial, marketing, english grammar, intercultural communication and international economics it so boring but it have necessary for my study. In my free times I read fiction books and cartoons. My fiction books like a The princess diaries it have many volume. In the first I read it in thai but I want to improve my engish I change to read it in english. Sometime I spend a lot of time read cartoons and fiction books in thai but I restrain myself and read textbook a lot. In this time I usually read books in english because it very important for improve my english how I read a lot it make me developed. Madame Figaro and Sudsapda talk about fashion woman health and anything for new generation .Entertain is a movie magazine. I always watch thai news from television however while I want deep information I read news online to make me understand.

Jet propelled mobile? Oops!

Scientific American, one of the magazines I read, had an interesting video in this weeks online version: "Samsung looks for 'jet' propulsion" (2009). I'm not actually looking for a new mobile, but watched the video because I wanted to know what new technology had persuaded a science magazine to run what looks a bit like an advertisement. In fact, most of the video shows Samsung's vice-president of sales talking about the new phone. And that was what caught my interest.
The Korean VP's speaks English clearly and very effectively, and with plenty of mistakes in his grammar. However, Samsung sensibly realises that the important thing for marketing is the message, not the language, and the message was clear and well said.
I'm not about to run out and buy the new mobile, but it was a good example of how we need to find the right balance between fluency in using English and grammatical accuracy. Of course, grammar does matter, especially in academic writing, but grammar matters because it helps us to say exactly what we want to say.

Since I start learn English language in AEP class. I have to read more a good English book because I would like my English improve very quick. An English book that I read is a novel or short story. I read an English short story because It is easy to remember the word and the meaning of word. Accually, I prefer read a general book. I read a fashion, health and gossip magazine. I fell relax to read them. It is not too bad because they talk about general thing in our life. For example, A maxgazine called Lisa, Lisa is a favourite one of mine. It is always talking about how to be healthy and happy life. I feel enjoying and relaxing to read them. I also read a newspaper but not everyday. I read Thai newspaper about four times a week. Now I read more in English language news.

What Peter Reads

I read a lot. I have to read for work, and I read in my free time to relax or to learn new things. I read books: novels, history, and philosophy are the usual books I read. I also read a few magazines every week. My two favourite magazines are The Economist, and New Scientist. Both of these are available online now. I only subscribe to the online version of The Economist, so I always read it online. I like The Economist because it is very well written, carefully researched, and it covers a wide range of topics, not just economics, but also politics, business, social issues, science and technology. New Scientist, as the name suggests, is a science magazine. Although I subscribe to the printed version, I usually also read the online version of New Scientist. It is much more convenient than the printed magazine, and it's much easier to search online.
For my daily news, I rely on the BBC News website. I have a look at The Nation most days, but I don't like it very much. The quality of the English is so-so, and there isn't much critical thinking there, but it is a reasonable source for local news on some topics.

And how about you? What do you read?

What do you read

How much do you read

About Peter

My name is Peter, and I teach in the Academic English Program at AUA.
What are my academic interests? My earliest interests in anything academic began when I started high school. From day 1, I loved science. I used to read my science text books on the bus to and from school, and I read a lot more than we did in class. I thought it was wonderful learning about how the things around me, the trees, rocks, and everything else, were created and worked. At first, I loved biology the most, but then I moved to chemistry, and finally physics. And my all time favourite subject in high school was mathematics. I loved it. It seemed magical to me that it could give explanations of so many things in neat and simple formulae, and that things could be proven with 100% certainty.

After high school, I studied physics and mathematics at university as part of a science degree. However, I had also become interested in philosophy in high school, so I switched to a humanities degree. I continued studying pure mathematics, but my major became philosophy, and a couple of languages.

Today, I still read science magazines and books on science, and I continue to read and study philosophy. I also read history and literature.

What makes a good dictionary?

As I mentioned in class this morning, I regularly use three different English dictionaries. The one I normally use is the Oxford English Dictionary [OED], which I use in the online version. I printed out the OED entry for the word academic from there this morning, which gave us the definition: "Of or belonging to an academy or institution for higher learning" (academic, 1989, 2.a.). I access this online, so if I'm at my computer, or at any computer with Internet access, it's easy and convenient for me to check a word.
However, sometimes I'm sitting down reading a book, and then it's more convenient to use a book to check something. For that, I use the Concise Oxford English Dictionary, which is much smaller than the OED. The Concise OED is a large book, but it's only one volume. The printed version of the OED is 20 very large volumes that take up almost 3 metres on the bookshelves; it is not very convenient to use. I also have the electronic version of the Concise OED installed on my computer, and I sometimes check a word in that.
Finally, the other dictionary I occasionally check is the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary. This is a popular dictionary with students, so I sometimes check a word there to see what the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary says about it. As with the OED, I access this online. Unlike the OED, access to the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary is free; there is a link to it from our AEP class blog. Have a look in the "Useful Links for AEP students" on the right. The Cambridge dictionary only lists two definitions for the adjective academic, and the first one is the one we wanted this morning. It defines academic as "relating to schools, colleges and universities," (academic (studying), 2008), which is very similar to the OED's definition A.2.a.
