The new attractive scheme for improving our working lives...

The news which I selected to post on as my first response essay is about the technology of business. As we have seen in the current world, the advance of technology has been related to the crucial developing strategy of many business organizations. It cannot be denied that currently the utility of innovative technology is essential for every company because it is enable companies to enhance their business transactions and also create a new effective style of management within their organizations in order to grow their companies more rapid and strong. Therefore, living among the high competitive atmosphere in the world of business, it is beneficial for us to be more curious about knowing how huge companies adopt the advance of technology for improving their businesses, especially the new style of processing operated by computer. Therefore, the detail in this news attracts my interesting and persuades me to discuss about this new operation in this responding paper.

According to the news "BYOC:Should employees buy their own computers?", the detail in this news refers us about the new campaign of operation, namely "bring your own computer"(BYOC). This scheme boosts company to promote their employees to buy their own computer or tablet for their jobs. The objective of this scheme is cutting company's budget to spend on purchasing a new high-technology computer for their employees in order to work more effective. Cutting budget on this expenditure does not mean that companies are not required to take their responsibility on this improvement. They have to encourage their employees to buy a new computer with their supporting subsidies. But, with this IT provision, companies push their responsibility on asset to their employees. However, employees also benefit from this scheme because they can do their jobs with perfectly supporting equipment that they are selected by themselves. Furthermore, BYOC also provides an attractive service which allows employees to work remotely. This is the result from the improvement of a smart program which provides some virtualization techniques for being accessible to the company's central data everywhere. Therefore, with the high advance of this program, worker can be like a mobile employee which it was only a wishful thinking of office workers in the past. Nevertheless, unless this scheme has been implementing in some huge company, the system are still in the question on whether the outcome of this scheme will be achieved same as it is expected.

As we have seen, BYCO is an interesting scheme which is created to respond with the modern style of working. Indeed, the main concept of this working can generally be described as working with the sense of happiness. Happiness in workplace can be generated by making both employee and employer be satisfied with their personal requirement. For workers, money is not often thought as the only one factor that makes workers be happy with their job, but the flexibility on their jobs should also be intentionally considered. Indeed, one of flexibilities which almost every employee require is time. Nobody does not want to work at the office lately because they want to go back home to have a time with their family or go to travel somewhere with their friends. So, without this operation, they have to work until finish at the office (In condition that one accessible method for opening the system can launch only on company's computer). As a result of this, they have less time with their families and less time to relax, this might cause those workers have more tension on their jobs. It cannot be denied that when employees work with tension, sometime they cannot produce a good work as well as working without being stress. For this reason, BYCO will help them to have a better working life with more flexible of time. They are also eligible to work with different atmosphere which it will help them have more creative ideas on their work. This can be proved by the result of conducting this scheme on the huge organization like Microsoft. They disclosed that proceeding on this scheme make a large number of their employees being more satisfied with their working lives and they also consent that their employees have produced their work more impressive and effective. Therefore, the advantage of this scheme should be resulted to both company and employee.

However, I also realize with what Erik Sherman said "The driving factor behind the strategy may have more to do with wishful thinking than reality". Absolutely, we can imply from this interesting implication that this scheme still need to take times for making a progress on. It still have many challenges that entrepreneur and computer engineering need to find out a solution to overcome and they also need to have a constant strategy for making a substantial improvement on this project. Eventually, I really hope that this scheme which I am regarded as the outstanding plan to improve people's working life is more trustworthy and more potential.

  1. So, who is going to subsidize my sleek new Dell with a 31 inch monitor? (I don't care too much about the rest, I think computers are so powerful today that most would meet my modest needs perfectly well, but spend several hours a day in front of my computer, and I appreciate a large monitor. 24 inches is OK, but I want more!)

As I read Win's post, I was reminded of what we do in AEP (and what is normal at university these days) - most of the writing is done outside of class, on students' own equipment, with the odd visit to a computer lab, mainly for written exams, which I'm hoping we will manage to start doing this week. (Most writing at university is not done in exams, but it's still an important skill, one where fluency is very important, which is why we want to blog on a daily basis.

  2. It's such an interesting topic. Thank you for sharing and I'd say your article caught my sight. Before I leave my comment, which can frighten you or maybe not. I have to introduce myself that I'm a former member of Peter's class. And I'll start to put my disagreement. Please feel free and fun to give me your response :D

I'm a person who has worked with two different situation. I think this program, BYCO, does not work and I only see the selfishness of the company. From my experience, the computer at office is really good and respond to my requirement because owners concern about it. They allow me to point out how much quality of computer I want. I think this model is worked for some careers such as writer, artist, illustrator or cartoonist which need highly individual identity. For many kind of jobs, they need social activity in a good working place or a good space to produce creative ideas. Actually, I agree with your example but what about Google's office. They paid much money to improve their office and create a new model of interior space for meeting as a relaxing conference room. All staffs use to meet together, brainstorm and discuss.

For getting new ideas, I think we need to see more things, different vision from our peers and come face to face. It's effective more than others. As simple example, AEP writing class, we come to study in the old version. Most of us are more productive than studying at home.

That I mention the selfishness of company because they can cut many budgets for example eletricity bill, renting office space and office furniture. If profit will return to their employees, It's OK. But I'm not sure. Maybe the Microsoft is the first and the last at the same time.

Nowadays, there's a tremendous expansion of cyber world or using many high technologies like BYCO. Personally, I dont like it because I found some persons lost social skills. I sill beleive in old model. If it does not work, it should disappear for a long time. Why are more companies still use the old one?
