A Semester on Ice (SkR&W3, p70, Critical thinking)

What we read

Having now done the global and close reading exercises that check our understanding of the ideas in the reading, Bixby and Scanlon follow their usual practice of inviting us to practice our critical thinking skills by expanding on the ideas in Osman's A Semester on Ice (2013, p. 71).

Bixby and Scanlon's questions

As we did before, read Bixby and Scanlon's questions, think about them for a minute or two, and then write down your response in one or two paragraphs.

The questions, which you can discuss in any order, are:
  • What types of research take place in Antarctica?
    • Why is this research important? Which type of research are you interested in, and why?

  • Kamal chose to spend three months in Antarctica, the coldest place on Earth. In spite of the challenges, how do you think he benefited from the experience?

Tips for response writing

As usual our main purpose in this response writing exercise is to give a thoughtful, critical response to the prompts, which are Bixby and Scanlon's questions. Use the formal style appropriate to an academic context, and write paragraphs that make sense to readers as independent pieces of writing. The goal is to share your ideas that expand on what we have read, writing fluently to communicate effectively.

  1. I think Kamal got many experience from the living in the Antarctica three months. Firstly, he could learn methods to survive in the coldest place in the world. Secondly, he could know increasingly the Antarctica such as environment, geography, weather, climate etc. Last but not least, he got the rare experience that make him stronger than now. He can use these skills from this place to survive wherever in the world, I think. So Kamal received the worth experience from the Antarctica.

    1. I agree with you,I think after he lived in the Antarctica for three months with many skills to survive. So, he can survive wherever in the world too.

    2. I totally agree with your opinion. However, I think he should try surviving in Sahara desert as well in order to know how to survive in extremely scorching and treacherous cold conditions. LMAO

  2. In the introduction to his blog, Osman tells us that he is in Antarctica to do research on the ice, specifically, ice from three kilometers deep in the ice sheet. Since ice that deep must be very old, we can infer that the research is about the history of the climate recorded in the ice that has built up over thousands of years. Perhaps it gives scientists clues not only about how the global climate has changed, but also records material that will allow us to work out what caused climate change over the long history of Antarctica's ice. Maybe it contains things like oxygen levels, dust, and so on. This is useful because it's important for our species to understand our planet's changing climate before it makes us extinct. Although life and the planet will continue happily without any human beings on Earth, most of us probably think it would be good if humans did continue to live here.

No time for the question about how Osman might have benefitted from his three-month stay on the ice, but it is interesting. Hopefully others chose to respond to that question, so I can read their ideas on it.

  3. For me, I think the types of research is blog, which someone loves to share their stories or lifestyles. This research is fascinating because the researcher has to collect data for doing the research or thesis by reference for direct experience that is primary data. For me, I desire to do academic research about Languages or Psychology because I would like to adapt my knowledge from university studies. I love to observe human behavior, along with how to use communication and languages.

    1. I think his writing is a blog, and he does discuss his research on the blog, but I'm not sure a blog is type of research. It is, rather, one way to publish research, and increasingly common these days.

  4. Kamal chose to spend three months in Antarctica, the coldest place on Earth. So, he can have many benefits from the experience such as he knows how to survive with extreme situation, how to do when the temperature of the body is below 35 ํc , how to pack the bag before to go camping. He can do in real practice not just lean only theory likes other people.

  5. I'm interested in psychological research because human mind is always hard to follow and there is always something new that I've never known.
I think he may get more advantage information for his research if he stays there longer or he wanted to experience this hard situation for long in order to report what he faced and that might be helpful for another one who is going to go there0

    1. I'm not really into the field of study that you suggest but I also interest in it too. In my previous school every students have to conduct their science project and once I was thinking about psychological research. However, the way to get reliable results is very difficult for high school students, so my group move our interest to environmental research instead.

    2. I think so, I'm interested in Psychological research. he lack of physiological and safe needs. Therefore, he had to handle with mental like feeling unsafe and physical like insufficient foods or clothes.

  6. One type of research that take place in Antarctica is searching for the fossils of animals from the previous era. Since the weather there is extremely cold, it seems like the dead body will be kept completely just like when it still alive. Learning the anatomy of the fossil will help scientist figure out the evolution of organisms. This type of research have interested me since I was young. One of my favorite cartoon animation is the Ice age and it makes me wonder about the organisms that already extinct and question why they gone from this world. Moreover, I also like the documentary that simulate the life of extincted organisms from previous era too.

    2. I like Now's idea about the type of this research and that is interesting and the reason that relates to evolution of organism is sensible which I agree with.

  8. In my opinion, In Antarctica the Scientist might do the research about the climate change in this place because this is a serious problem that make ice sheet in Antarctica melting. also, I want to know that the weather in Antarctica is changing or not in the least a few years before and how it effects with wildlife there.

I surely that it must be a extreme challenge to deal with the weather in this place and how to live here. i strongly believe that he gains a lot of experience from this trip.

    1. I agree with you, because today the climate change is the crucial problem in the world. It can impact the large changes to the earth.

  9. I think the research that take place in Antarctica is a survival training in the cold weather research. It's important because it's teach him how to survive and staying warm in this situation.

In spite of the challenge,Kamal get a lot things from this training like the lessons about how to survive in the threatening condition and the keys to survival.

  10. I am not sure that what kind of the research is but I would prefer to choose "geology" to be my best choice now that I just accidentally read Kamal Osman is a geosciences doctoral student below the topic. I thick the main reason why the research is very important is because it gives us more information about south pole and make me know more about ice place there as well. For me, I would rather be interested in technology than others else seeing that I would like to get and know more information about technology which just was invented.

I strongly believe that he would get a great experience and could remember how to do and survive in such a treacherous condition like living in South Pole and his experience also could stay with him the rest of his life. Finally, he could share his knowledge that he received from there with other ones he loves or needs to.

  11. In my opinion, science research take place in Antarctica and region in the Earth system is interested me. We can also study about historical and how the world change to the present.

I think this story are challenging human abilities and knowledge to servive in the coldest place on Earth. This experience showed us limit of body, how important of factors and trining in our live.
