Summary
Following our reading of "Emotional Thinking" (2018, pp. 51 - 52, the second critical thinking question that Rogers and Zemach ask us to discuss relates the ideas in the article to the evolution of human decision making.

Response
As usual, we will discuss Rogers and Zemach's question in a comment, giving us a more permanent record of our ideas in addition to getting in some practice writing for fluency in a less academic style, but still writing our ideas in grammatically complete sentences that clearly state our ideas. Both of the critical thinking questions here are likely to stimulate ideas that will be useful in the coming writing task for this unit, so it will be worthwhile to read and think about your classmates' ideas responding to the same questions.

Although I think that most decisions are probably best when made with at least some intellectual input in addition to the emotional influece that is very hard to avoid, there are exceptions.
ReplyDeleteFirst, decisions that involve public health should be made intellectually. For example, in deciding how to respond to the Covid-19 virus, the strong emotions that many people have whether for or against using face masks, for or against banning overseas tourists, and so on should not be allowed to make the decisions, which should be based on the facts and the understanding of experts. If someone feels sorry for tourist hotels, for example, so does not ban visitors from countries with high rates of infection, that emotionally based decision could rapidly lead to a far more expensive disaster. Similarly, if parents feel love for their drug-addicted daughter, that emotion could lead them to keep her out of prison at great expsnse, which might encourage her to think that she can continue using the drugs, leading to death. THe more intellectual decision based on reason might be to let her go to gaol to learn that she is responsible for the mess she is making of her life.
On the other hand, when choosing a partner for life, although intellectual factors such as a cost benefit analysis of the person's income or career prospects are important, the emotional response you have will be very important in creating a long-lasting relationship that is happy for both people.
In my opinion, first, I always use only my feeling to choose my favorite song or movie without other factors. In contract, while working as a lawyer, I prefer to use my intellectual thinking in my legal consulting. That is to say; my work should depend on facts and legal information.
ReplyDeleteThe last situation for using equally emotion and intelligence is a public speaking. When speaking in front of many audiences, the speaker should know audiences’ moods and say a right word in a right situation. He can show his feeling in his words to convince the audiences. The most important part is do not forget the real intention or purpose of your speaking.
I think making decision on hiring a employee to work for you usually involves lots of emotion. In my experience, my bosses usually hire people they feel good about or have good relationship with.
ReplyDeleteI think decision of eating food should be the most intellectual decision. Eating healthy food is good for our health, but if we eat unhealthy food that can make us sick.
From the last paragraph on page 51, I agree with that. We do not need to choose between intellectually or emotionally. We can do it both by follow your emotion first, but do not do it solely, if you have time, you should take time to think what is the most logical decision . For example if you want to choose what do you want to eat, you can follow your emotion first, however, if you have time, you can think and find support thoughts. Is that good food to eat? then make the good decision. So I think the decisions that should be made is equally emotionally and intellectually. It depends on the situation and how long can you take time for making decision. If you want to make intellectually decision in every single situation, it might take more time for your daily life.
ReplyDeleteMy decision that should be made from emotionally is usually use in my daily life such as select to eat or wear or watch (a movie) and something that I don't know it before
ReplyDeleteI usually make the decision form intellectually at my job such as to find the best solution for solve problems or something that can affect to my life or another people
I sometimes my decision that should be equally emotionally and intellectually at some things that can't affect to my life or another people
