Skillful 3: Reading and Writing, page 89 - Critical thinking on "Dangers and Opportunities in the Arctic Circle"

Summary

In exercise E on page 89, Rogers and Zemach invite us to discuss three critical thinking questions that follow up ideas presented in "Dangers and Opportunities in the Arctic Circle" (2018, p. 87-88). We have already done question 1 as a quick response. We will skip question 3, at least for now.

Response

As we have just done before, we will discuss Rogers and Zemach's question in blog commnets, which is likely to generate a wider variety of ideas in addition to giving us a more permanent record of our ideas while also getting in some practice writing for fluency in a less academic style, but still writing our ideas in grammatically complete sentences that clearly state our ideas.

Question

After thinking about it for a few minutes, write down your response to Rogers and Zemach's critical thinking question 2 on page 89 in a comment below.

  • Climate change causes some problems, yet also brings some benefits.
Should people try to halt or reverse climate change, or let it happen?

You have 15:00 minutes to plan and write a response to the three questions. I suggest you divide your time roughly as:
  • planning = 3:00 minutes
  • writing = 9:00 minutes, and
  • editing = 3:00 minutes.

  1. Although there are real benefits to climate change for some people, we should try to stop it.

First, there are real benefits from climate change. As we saw in the reading, it makes shipping easier and cheaper when ice melts so that routes through the Arctic can be used. Also, if cold areas warm, they might become more fertile for farming, which is good for the people in those areas. However, the problems that climate change brings are likely to be greater for most people. When sea levels rise, that will threaten the homes of 600 million people who live on teh coast. Bangkok, for example, could be totally under sea water, and that is a big problem for the millions of people who now live in Bangkok. In fact, a lot of Thailand will disappear if sea level rises even a little. Another problem with climate change is seen in AUstralia, which suffered severe bush fires recently as a result of the changing climate. The climate change has also made Australia much drier, and this will likely worsen. Consequently, we should try to halt of reverse climate change to benefit most people on Earth.

  2. I think we should be stop climate change problem because we are not the only one kind who living in the world. The climate change might made human life more easy like movement or shipping but if temperature increase, it going to affect directly to the animal as Polar Bear, some fish even people who live in Africa. This situation forces them to change lifestyle their culture or leave their homeland. I my opinion It’s more easies if we change our lifestyle a bit for save the world and make world better for everyone.

  3. Climate change is a global phenomenon hence humankind should analyse about this issue carefully. Althoung there are some advantages of changing in earth temperature, the overall environment is ruined.

The ecosystem is extremely sensitive because all creature lives together in the law of the food chain. Changing in animal habitats results in the extinction of a colossal number of species.

The many obvious case studies about this issue are shown in the sea. Coral Bleaching is a huge threat which affects marine animals. Corals are house and food of them. Nowadays, It rarely finds vivid coral in the shallow sea.

Climate change is changing our world to another version which might hard to survive.

  4. We should try to halt climate change since it's bring a lot of problem to environment and nature around the world. First is the green house effect that leading to global warming, when the global its affect to the heat in the world, the water in the Arctic circle change, the sea level change which has become chain effects around the world some land might be sink under the water. This chain reaction related to environment, human, and also land animal. The green house effect is an example that we heard very often since it's become more serious now. hearing a lot of news about polar bears go to town and searching food from a garbage pile is so unbelievable and pity but this is a fact that we are facing on.

The easiest way to help the climate change can start from home by reduce our plastic consume. The plastic is one of the key factor that effect on global warming.

  5. Climate change should definitely be halted because it brings many negative impacts on our world. Firstly, it causes the melting of polar ice and the rise of sea level. The melting of polar ice not only affect polar ecology but also affect all of us either. It is mentioned in the article that two-thirds of the world's largest cities would be affected because many large cities located near the ocean, including Bangkok. According to several researches, Bangkok is sinking gradually. If we do not stop climate change now, Bangkok would be completely underwater by 2050. Secondly, climate change brings a lot of hazardous natural disasters. Australian wildfire last year exemplifies the more fires caused by climate change. Climatologists also point out that climate change contributing more storms, which caused tremendous damages and casualties. For example, Hurricane Katrina, which is the costliest tropical storm in the world, costing more than $125 billion in damage and more than thousands of casualties. Also, Bangladesh and India face severe tropical storms and floods every year.
