Art: Themes and Purposes. Quest 2, p. 71 - opening page to chapter 3. (2015, term 6)

For the rest of the term in Quest, we will be reading about and discussing art.
Painting Van Gogh by T. F. Chen, 1991
An obvious first question might be: What is art?

However, Hartmann limits her discussion to a much narrower set of art, starting with the image of the painting above on the opening page of chapter 3, and we too can probably ignore the difficult question of what art is, even if we do not limit ourselves here to the traditional visual and sculpted forms of art that are the subject of chapter 3 of Quest (2007, p. 71 - 104).

Write down your responses to Hartmann's questions on page 71, as below:
  • Look at the picture. What images do you see in the painting? Are they realistic?
  • What do you like or dislike about this painting? Why?
  • What is your favourite work of art? Why do you like it? (p. 71) You need not limit yourself to visual art in responding to this question.

  1. The images in Chen's painting are not very realistic, although they are recognizable. The woman on the right is clearly a woman, but she is not realistically shown. The most realistic object is perhaps the flowers in the vase on the table in the foreground.

Do I like this painting? It's OK, but nothing special. I think it's hard to like because it doesn't make much sense unless you recognize the references to other works of art that make it up. It's an interesting idea, but I think the mix of up styles is too much., although the mainly warm colours do unify it a bit.

My favourite work of art? In visual arts, I love the work of Picasso, whose later style is the model for the woman in Chen's painting above. But to pick out one work as the best is very difficult.

I prefer literature to visual arts but again, it's hard to pick out just one: Homer? Pride and Prejudice? Hume's essays? Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn"?

  2. It's a hard question for me. I exactly don't know what I like work of art.Probably I might like dance. The movement of body when I dance made me feel depentdent. Healthy and strongness of the muscles are presented by movement shows the inner how you feel.

  3. In this picture, I see a painter drawing the picture while a high-class woman are sitting in the back of the painter. It seems like she might either see the painter's painting or wait for the picture drawn by that painter. The images in this painting are quite realistic. It is vivid, colorful picture and involve unique painting style, which makes me impressed.

For me, my favorite work of art is the painting in the Thai former grand palace (Wat Pra Keaw) located in Bangkok. Not only is it distinct art, but also it is full of details of the story Ramayana. In addition, the style of it architecture is also unique.

    1. The paintings at Wat Pra Keaw were also the thing that my sister and her kids liked most when we visited. They spent an age slowly enjoying them. I also enjoyed seeing them again and noticing details that I had missed on my previous visits.

  4. I think that this image is the artists painting the impressionist portrait, and another portrait is lying next to the woman, which drawn in Dadaism style. No, they are not realistic but abstract piece of work.

I don't like this because they look very messy like a carricature than an ordinary famous painting.

My favourite work of art is Chinese calligraphy, because it is very simple but can convey the aesthetic and energy of the painter in a fancy way and need a lot of skill. They need a hard work to stroke in a few minutes and become a painting. The shape and form of the Chinese character also reflect a lot of history about the language.

    1. I also love Chnese calligraphy. I used to practise it when I studied Chinese. I was never very good, but the practised helped me to better appreciate the great work of the master calligraphers. Even if you don't read Chinese, I think you can still enjoy the beauty in the lines.

  5. I see two people,a man and woman, the man is painting and the woman is acting like a model.

i think this painting looks funny because the body of women have different color, and I cannot see her finger, so for me they are not realistic.

My favorite work of art is nature painting because it soothes me when I see this kind of painting

  6. a lot of images are painted on this picture. There are the man who as drawing the picture, the two-faced woman who is sitting on the chair looking straight towards her, and other two pictures which is someone in the white legs walking and the quite old man in all sepia face. Apparently, they aren't realistic at all.

This painting is pretty desirable for me, because it's colorful and is reflected the thought and imagination of Van Gogh, probably along with the culture at that time in the lens of this artist.

If the world is without art, it will not definitely lively at all. My favorite work of art is the pieces of W.A. Mozart. I really like his composed songs not only piano solo but also concerto. They made me more relaxed, and creative.

  7. The image is a painting of a model, which is very popular in the old era that didn't have a camera. The artist tends to draw portrait, natural view and abstract. I like this paint because it's style is unique with saturated colors. If I look over the realistic (the position, dimension of the model an painter, color), this picture shows what happened in the past. The Van Gogh's arts are unique as I know his art names "starry night", which was used contrast color shade (black, blue, yellow) to the picture.

My favorite work of art is music because it makes me relax and has emotion. The works must be given details when they was produced.

    1. One of my favorite work of art is "Hotel California" by the Eagle , which was released in 1976. The lyric is strange and hard to interpret. One thing that really impress me is the word "Mercedes bends", which some people thought it was a wrong spelling; actually, it's right to sarcasm.
