Right royal bloopers

Introduction and summary

In "The Crown 3 trailer: Olivia Colman's Queen faces a crisis of confidence," we are told about season 3 of The Crown, NetFlix’s series that tells the story of England's Queen Elizabeth II from her life before she became queen in 1952. According to the article, which is based on the trailer just released by NetFlix, the new season begins with new actors playing the royals in 1977, which is a much more stressful time for Britain, with a bad economy, labour strikes, and a socialist prime minister coming to power. The tense and unhappy personal lives of the royal family are also shown, for example, Elizabeth's son, Charles, her husband, Phillip, and her sister, Princess Margaret.

Response: What is your opinion?

Helena Bonham Carter as
Bellatrix Lestrange
Unfortunately, in my summary I couldn't name the new actors playing the more aged members of the royal family, but one of them, Helena Bonham Carter, caught my interest. I've liked her acting for many years. She usually stars in odd roles. She was, for example, Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter films, where she was a wonderfully evil presence, but my favourite film she has done so far is Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, in which she plays Mrs. Lovett, who turns Sweeney Todd the barber's customers into meat pies in her shop below his. They have a wonderful romance as Mr. Todd seeks revenge on an corrupt judge who ruined Sweeney's life by falsely imprisoning him so that he could steal the barbers wife and daughter for wicked purposes. Johnny Depp is great as Sweeney Todd in this very dark musical, but it's Helena Bonham Carter who makes the dark shine with fun.

Also interesting for me, the article makes some interesting comments about a detail in the film. There is a mistake because it says that Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee, in 1977, was 25 years after her coronation as queen in 1953. But if you do the simple arithmetic, 1953 to 1977 is only 24 years, not 25. According to the article, NetFlix decided to keep this mistake because it repeats the mistake made on record in the news broadcasts at the time. Of course, the private scenes between the royal family members, although perhaps based on evidence from the time, are all made up. No one really knows what the princes, princesses, and queen really said when they were shouting at each other in their fights, but to tell a story that honestly portrays them as people, the script writers have to use some imagination, and historians have done that for at least the last 2,500 years, since the time when Thucydides wrote his histories of the wars of Classical Greece in the 5th century BC.

I'm looking forward to watching this new season on November 17. Maybe I should first watch the first two seasons again.

I hope you enjoy this official trailer from YouTube.

Question for your classmates

Should historical films be historically accurate?

  1. Compared to my last blog post, the one about rats driving cute cars in search of food, this article, which is about the same length or a bit shorter, was much more difficult to summarize. I think it took me about 15 minutes to read the rat article and summarize safely under the maximum word limit. In contrast, it took me twice as long, about 30 minutes to write the above summary of my chosen article from the Entertainment & Arts section of the BBC News website. After reading it three times, I wrote my first summary, which was OK, except that it was 139 words, which was too many. I revised for another four minutes, to get version 2 down to 129 words — still too many. A few minutes later, version 3 was 121 words, which was much better, but still too long. Finally, 27 minutes after I started, version 4, the one above, was 119 words, which is just under the maximum word limit. As I said, it can be very challenging to summarize a piece of work when there there is a maximum word limit.

And then I just went back and revised again. The current version, number 5, has taken me a total of 39 minutes to write. But I'm happy with it now.
These details about my summarizing process are not very exciting, but I thought it might be useful to record and tell you exactly how much time and effort I needed to write a good summary.

  2. And my responses in two paragraphs is a very safe 357 words, which is well over the 200 word minumum. This was also much easier for me to write than the much shorter summary.

Althogther, this took me about 80 minutes, which I think is reasonable. And if it takes me over an hour to do this, you should reasonably expect to take about two hours, but you don't have to do it all in one go, although that is what I've just done before I go to relax with an episode or two of The Big Bang Theory before I sleep. (The time stamps tell you when I published the blog post and each of the comments.)
