Summary of “ Social media damages teenagers' mental health, report says”

According to the research from the Education Policy Institute and the Prince's Trust, at the age of 14 young people in the area are facing the problems in mental health in the area of well-being and self-acceptance. From the study, girls suffer more when compared to boys. However, they are more resilient and able to bounce back to stabilisation in their late adolescence while boys are getting worse. The research shows further that those who are unhappy and become hyper connected will be effected in having a lower self esteem and a negative well being. Another study carried out during the school closure and lockdown in the pandemic reveals that a regular exercise gives a positive impact in mental health in this age group and the best way is to have them be able to access to the support and resources needed to make their transitional period to adolecence smooth.

Kitt’s response to “Social media damages teenagers' mental health, report says”

The article straightforwardly inform the readers that a heavy use of social media in young people causes a negative impact to them- their well being and self esteem. I do agree with the report, but what I’m curious about is what are the damages to their well being and self esteem and how the teenagers cope with the the challenges. I just find a few words like depression and hopelessness in the news. Maybe this is only a news report that why I can’t find the explanation which explore deeply into the matter.

However, the article presents a few findings which is nice to know, especially the rising figures in the teenagers with probable mental illness compared to the year 2017. It is also interesting to find out that sport and participating in activities have a positive impact on them during the lockdown and school closure in the coronavirus last November. What I do agree most with this article is that the most important is to provide the teenagers the accessibility to the the support and resources they need which will help them to go through their transitional period to adolecence smoothly.

Talking about the vulnerability in young people in their transitional period, it occurs in almost every region and every culture. The understanding and a great support from parents play an important role in protecting their children from the various temptations. The problem of heavy use of social media in the current hyper-connected society would be one of upcoming challenges we are going to face. The quicker we set up plan to fight against the problem, the less severity will be.
