Phing: Golden Bags

Summary of "The French icon who revolutionised women's clothes"

According to "The French icon who revolutionised women's clothes" by Vivian Song, Gabrielle Chanel, also known as Coco, a famous couturier, pioneered women's suits. Her signature is mixing some elements of sartorial fashion into women's clothes. The concepts of freedom, mobility and comfort were was represented in her design, which released wearers from the incarceration of corsets. The sense of the feminine is full in Chanel's work, even though the word 'feminine' hadn't existed. The new chapter of contemporary women's fashion was begun and influenced by her iconic style. Coco's path didn't start smoothly and confronted her with lots of obstacles such as a riot and post-war effects, but she captured the mood of the new era well and inserted it deliberately into her clothes. However, some professionals think that it might be exaggerating about any designers as fashion itself highlights and contributes change, which   doesn't mean change originates from them.

Phing's response to "The French icon who revolutionised women's clothes"

The myth of Chanel has touched people heart, leading to the explosive growth of the brand. Gabrielle Chanel has become a fashion icon which doesn't influence only Parisian, but many women and designers around the world see her as a role model. The legend has been continued across the century. Nowadays, Chanel iconic bags are valuable more than gold even though Chanel clients, younger generations, might not be identical as before.

The sentence, Chanel iconic bags are valuable more than gold, is not totally a metaphor because investment in Chanel bags was gaining value faster than gold because the prices of those iconic bags have only increased and risen over 70% between 1955 and 2010. In the resell luxury handbags market, Chanel bags are always welcome.

Some luxury goods gain value over time as long as it is in good or mint condition. Although the use can be damage values of the bags, almost everyone would like to carry their belove bag; therefore, they use them very carefully and try to protect their It bag from water, rain and sharp things. There was a meme which was viral many years ago which present a picture of two women in the rain with their bags. I think It is a clear example of how nowadays women use her designer bag. Although the bags are designed to be comfortable to use, users are still uncomfortable and worry because they are carrying their investment. For example, the reissue 2.55 bag, designed by Coco Chanel, was outstanding from other cumbersome bags during that time. The chain was included in the design to represent Chanel signature which is supporting activities and movements of users with comfort. In my opinion, the chain looks like imprisonment more than supporting.

Despite legend continuing, the original message and spirit might be transformed by time.

Phing's question

Do you think that your personal collection such as CD, stamps, postcard or other things can make lots of money or become the investment?

  1. I'm looking forward to Phing's response to the article about Coco Chanel she has chosen to summarize for us. As I read it, lots of ideas came to mind, from my mother's fashion worries back in the 1960s and 70s, to surprise that Chanel was already one hundred years old.

And that reminded me of the Australian series Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, which I enjoyed on NetFlix a few months ago. (Sorry - it's not currently streaming in Thailand.) The wonderfully feminist lady detective Phryne Fisher shows off many of the fashion ideas that Phing's summary and article talk about, and also presents the other important idea about the changing social attitudes at the time, and Miss Fisher is set in 1920s Melbourne, which is the same century ago since Chanel began revolutionizing women's lives.

As I said, I'm very much looking forward to Phing's response to her fascinating article. I would not normally have chosen to read that one, but am glad Phing brought it to my notice.

    1. After reading the article, I'm also surprised about the timeline. I have watched the first episode of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries but I don't know why it's not currently streaming.

    2. Phing, I hope it comes back soon. I would like to watch it again. I'm glad I had seen all the episodes in the three seasons before it disappeared.
