Skillful 4: Reading and Writing, page 27 - After you watch

Discuss (v.) & discussion (n.)

page 8
In every unit of Skillful 4, authors Lindsay Warwick and Louis Rogers make frequent use of the verb discuss (2018). The noun discussion is in fact the very first word of every unit, and the third word in every unit is the verb, for example on page 152. Rogers and Zemach almost always collocate the verb discuss with the object noun partner, or put them in close proximity. They clearly intend the discussion to be spoken, which is what we sometimes do, but in many cases, it helps our reading and writing class more to have a written discussion of the questions the authors ask us to discuss.

Why hold the discussion on an online forum?

Apart from the fact that ours is a reading and writing class, there are several solid reasons for holding at least some of our discussions online.
  • It practices response writing for fluency. Unlike in more formal academic writing, the goal is not to do research or even to plan carefully, but to quickly communicate your own ideas on a topic or in response to an issue. You should still write complete sentences organized in paragraphs, but we are not looking for a carefully planned piece of work that was extensively reviewed and revised after it was first written and posted. Response writing is not academic writing; it does, however, practice the fluency that is also important in more formal work.

  • This sort of response writing is common at universities today. As part of their assessment, students are often expected to participate in online discussion forums that explore issues raised in lectures, seminars, or tutorials. This sort of response writing is a common component of academic work.

  • Brainstorming and sharing ideas independently of face-to-face group discussion typically produces a wider and more thoughtful variety of responses, which is good for the group. See, for example, the articles on this in the Harvard Business Review by Art Markman (2017), Andrew O’Connell (2010), and Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic (2015). (If you are interested, read some of the sources I've cited here after our class. They are all short.)

Warwick and Rogers' questions

Rogers and Zemach's questions are:
  1. Why have mobile devices broadened the popularity of video games?

  2. The gaming industry generates a higher annual revenue than the movie and music industries combined. What possible explanations are there for this?

  3. The concept of a “game”, from ancient board games to modern mobile gaming, has been popular throughout the ages. Why do you think this is the case?

One by one

We will answer each of Warwick and Rogers' questions in a short comment. For each question, you will have 2:00 minutes to plan and 4:00 or 6:00 minutes to write your comment. Plan and write fast!

A helpful strategy

pages 26 - 27
Imagine you are writing for someone who has neither seen the question you are answering nor the video that the question follows up. Your job is to clearly communicate your response to that reader. Because your writing should make sense independently of the question it might be answering, it is usually helpful to give background, which can often be done by paraphrasing the question into statements that begin your answer.

Remember: sentences in paragraphs

This is response writing. You want to communicate your ideas fluently as if you were speaking for two or three minutes to someone listening carefully. However, that person can't stop you to ask questions, so it's important to state your ideas in complete sentences organized into paragraphs.

  1. Why have mobile devices broadened the popularity of video games?
Majorly is the improved performance in the mobile device in these day and from now on, also convenient to play and portable to carry everywhere. With the people in the presented time who have to go out for work or working overtime, and really don't have time to stay stationary and playing some games, the mobile game will answer and solve the problem as their namesake.

  2. I think mobile devices boost the popularity of games because people always have their mobile with them, so it's convenient, and fun, to take it out and play anywhere at any time. I never play games, but one of my friend's son often goes some quick gaming between courses when we are having lunch or dinner.

Moreover, the mobile devices are have such a good efficiency as games consoles do. Thus, people can immediately check the games out and updates their situation every times they want.

  5. I think mobile devices support the popularity of video games, because the devices are convenient to carry on. Moreover, most of people have smart phones, so this allow them to access to video games almost anywhere and anytime. In the other word, before smart phones were invented, they had to play video games at home or go to video game shops.

  6. As almost everyone nowadays has mobile phones, it makes them to be able to use their phones any time which includes using the device playing games. This helps broaden the popularity of video games because the easier they can access using their phones, the more they they play the games.

  8. I never play computer games, but obviously they are popular, although I was surprised that they are even more popular then movies and music. Perhaps part of the reason is that people find them more rewarding because unlike the relatively passive activities of watching a film or listening to music, in a game, the player has control over what happens, so this might make people more willing to pay for that experience.

  9. However, the movies and music industry are so popular and they were long lasting as people think this is a classic way to reach out for their purposes, the gaming industry can get into broad spectrum of people. In addition, they can adjust various specification to reach people in many ages. Hence, it is no doubt why gaming industry gain more revenue than movies and music industry combined

  10. As the mentioned, the mobile game is quite accessible for every age and reasonable price to pay, even the time of playing the mobile game is short, you can play and quit it in the time you want, apart from the movie that they have to pay to support their platform, and sometimes people get lazy to finish one of them. Even music that mostly "Free" from youtube that the money that they will get have to depends on the view and popularity.

  11. The gaming industry gets a higher income compared to the movie and music industries because now many movies could be watched through youtube and Netfix. Also, many music could be downded from the internet while playing games online, the gamers need to buy the membership in order to get to the games.

  12. I think the gaming industry can generate higher revenues than the movies and music industries, because the gaming industry makes people become additive to it.

  13. Gaming industry is becoming more popular than movie and music industries because it is easy to play and persuade others to play with although the person who is invited does not interested on playing game. On the other hands, movie and music needs more interest for them.

  14. We can classify game into 2 groups. First, purchase a game which is a traditional one. People tend to buy a new game when the old one is boring/ Second, in-game purchase which earns lots of income. As we know, gaming leads us to a competitive situation. We paid items in the game to win their rival.

  15. When I thought about why humans have loved playing games for thousands of years, games such as chess (recently made famous again by the brilliant NetFlix series Queen's Gambit, to cards, and the hundreds (thousands?) of games that have been played since ancient times, I was reminded of an idea in historian Yuval Noah Harari's book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. In this book, Harari argues that it is our ability to tell, and love of telling, stories that made us the successful species that we became over the last 70,000 years. I think games are like a story, an imagined reality. In the game, we can explore new realities, and also forge social bonds with others. In fact, I want to develop this idea more, but I'm running out of time. ...

  16. Game has been popular for many ages because it is fun to play and build up our relationships. Playing games online and offline help players relaxed and have more times to do activities with friends and family. It makes us enjoy and recover at the same time.

  17. Firstly, it is such like a game on the life that called "War plan", in the ancient time, people who is the commander rank has to plan by setting the representative of various kind of soldier as meeple and put them to the targeted position, calculate the risk of sending out the soldier from there, until it is become the game. Chess is the good example that the many kind of troops such as Footman, Calvary, Fort, and General and also planning to send it out for attack to get their best result of every move/action. Until now that we have technology to provide us the real time gaming.

  18. People enjoy playing games even in the education. Sometimes people like to challenge themselves with competitive games. These are some reasons why games have been with us for such a long time and, of course, they will always be with us but maybe in different forms. Games would never be out of our life since the history.

  19. I think that human always finds something that is enjoyable and many people love competitive. When players finish games, they might gain more self-esteem. In the same way, beating their rival also provide a good feeling. Gaming also associates with social gathering both in face-to-face and virtual way.

  20. I think game has become a popular entertainment since the ancient times, because it allows people to interact with each other, and it can be used in multiple purposes such as entertainment, competitions, and education.
