Is it practical in businesses to reduce pay gap between male and female?

Source background
According to "Silicon Valley's gender problem extends beyond pay gap" (2016), a female name Moussouris claims that there are a number of working women in Microsoft (a company in Silicon Valley) who earned less than their male counterparts. However, Microsoft did not disclose any data or admit that they paid differently in the similar job. By the way, Joint Venture at Silicon Valley reports last year that "men in Silicon Valley reported earning as much as 61% more than their female counterparts" which can be an evidence that there really have gender pay gap in Silicon Valley.

My Yes/No question is:
Is it practical in businesses to reduce pay gap between male and female?

My answer is:
No, it is hard for businesses to reduce pay gap between male and female. Although government have a legislation to reduce pay gap between male and female, It is hard to follow in some businesses because some work in the business is need special skill which is hard for women to do such as engineer, plumber or technician.

In generally, each company pays salary based on employee's skill. If female don't have equal skill as male, it will be hard for them to get equal pay. Moreover, I think that female have some physical condition which is make they hard to work as hard as male. That's why, I think that in some company it will be hard for male and female to get equal pay.

  1. I'm wondering especially how the women in our class will respond to Ae's ideas clearly communicated ideas here.

But that's no reason why the men should not also respond to Ae's ideas, which seemed to me very controversial.

    1. I got your idea, but I have some idea to add.
In your answer mentions that female must have skill as male, so they will get equal pay. Why is the company must set 'male' to be a standard of salary? I think conversely, some work use a special skill of female or use 'female' : gender to accomplish the task too such as PR, secretary, public relations and so on.

Nowadays, the right of female is changed from the past, we have more role to do everything we want as male. The gender is not an indicator who is a successful person, but ability. (and give love with the task)

  3. Absolutely Yes. I was shocked to hear the news from Silicon Valley. As Jom says pays should be weighed by skills of the person not by gender: equal pay for equal work. Without doubt Silicon Valley knows this well. Then I wondered why the 61% gap of earning between men and women lays there. Maybe some genius male staff earn tremendously high salaries on their tasks and it pushes up the percentage of men's. Maybe many female staff choose their working style in balancing between work and their family; work is not everything for their lives. If it is not the case of the above, Ms. Moussouris should sue the company and clarify the matter.

The Similar case has happened in my country these days, but it is the gaps between regular and non-regular employees. Companies employ non-regular employees to reduce manpower cost and let them do the same work as regular staff. This must be illegal in a sense but companies do it taking advantage of loopholes in a law to survive in the competitive world. But now is the time to be reviewed this social problem at the diet (our parliament house).

    1. I think that may be Silicon Valley is the city of technology.

As I know, men are tend to like technology more than women. That's why, they revealed that salary of men in Silicon Valley is more than women.

    2. Do men tend to like technology more than women?
And if they do, is that because of any natural difference between men and women, or is it just the result of bad cultural traditions inherited from ancestors?

    3. I still think that most men are inclined to like technology more than women. More male friends of mine, including Singaporeans, Thais, Malaysians, Burmese and many others, are keen in technology than my female friends. I not sure whether this interest is caused by nature or whatsoever, but all of them use technology in our everyday life. However, I don't think people's interests nor genders are important to judge people's earning, it is their ability that determine how far they could go in their career path. But sometimes this world may also be biased to woman, for example, when my father went for a surgery three years ago, there were two best surgeons for him to decide. One is male and another is female(whom have slightly better profile). He chose male surgeon as he says "men are more patient than women" Thus, it depends on individual to decide and judge things related to gender but I still believe gender, age, races and status are not the true gauge of ability - talent is the main thing.
