The article, “The Look of a Winner” in Scientific American tells that when people vote or choice their leader, physical appearances of candidates could be a very important factor for their elections. They also shows the interesting result of experiment, which was examined by psychologists in Switzerland, that Swiss children can predict which candidate are more likely to win French parliamentary elections according to candidates’ picture.
I think that is true. For example, the approval rating of prime minister in Japan could be high, when his look is nice, although it always appears only for the beginning. Moreover, when it comes to business, I’ve heard that some Japanese businessmen get facial treatment in order to make contracts with new client, and they succeed to get signs. They said that they could get a kind of confidence after they had facial treatments, then new clients tend to trust them because that confidence would appear in front of clients. What do you think of that? Do you think they are crazy or not?

ReplyDeleteI think it a little crazy if people will concern about only physical appearances because physical appearances is not the factor that related to their ability or their perspective. However, most people always use physical appearances to be the first step to assume others.
ReplyDeleteI found Mimi's comment interesting. Most people would probably agree with her that it is "a little crazy", but as the results suggest, they do exactly the same thing themselves without realising it, or perhaps without being able to control themselves!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Taka chose this article to post on, it had already caught my attention.
I think this article rises a true thing. Normally for everything people just look at the appearance ahead, and other things later. However, it's not fair.
ReplyDeletePeople always concern about their appearance more than their ability. Good appearance will make them feel more confident. Especially, people who work as the actors, the marketing men and politicians. Their appearances must be the most important in their work. I think, in Thai society mass media is the channel which create the new value about appearance attention and this value will develop into strong social value in the future.
