Culture - Country - Product: Quest, p. 24, x. H.

Exercise H. on page 24 of Quest is Hartmann's first response writing exercise, something we have been practising daily for the past two weeks. However, I think it's also useful do spend the ten minutes that Hartmann suggests on this exercise, which is what we will now do. (Why did I say "I think" here?)

Choose one of these topics:

  • a popular product in your country that comes from another country
  • one custom that is important in your culture
  • one value that is important in your culture
Write about your topic for ten minutes. Don't worry about grammar, only that your ideas be clearly stated in sentences, and don't stop writing to use a dictionary. You don't need to worry about being correct or providing solid support for your ideas here. The purpose is to put down as many ideas as fluently as possible in the ten minutes you have.

  1. Samsung smartphones are very popular in Australia these days. When I've been visiting the last few years, I noticed that almost everyone now has one. Five years ago, this was unusual, but today, all of my brothers and sisters have smartphones, and Samsung is the preferred brand.

I like Samsung, too. and I guess maybe Australians like it for the same reason - it's more generic than Apple, so appeals to people who don't want to be tied too closely into one brand. To be honest, I also like the close tie in with Google. Samsung's Galaxy 3 and 4 not only use the Android operating system, but are designed to synch. with Google accounts - all three of my main Google accounts are synched to my Galaxy 4, and I'm eagerly waiting for the Galaxy 5 to arrive on the shelves.

Their arrival will also make the young son of one of my friends very happy - he will inherit my current phone.

  2. Nowadays, there are so many brands and products of the mobile phones in Thailand, but the most popular one is not made in this country but an imported one - I am talking about the innovative iPhone which made in the US.

People in Thailand use this kind of mobile phone not only for their communication purpose but also to show their social status: he or she may be wealthy or not, but the public will decide that the one who use iPhone has more money than the others.

  3. As there are many brands today. Sincerely, most of Thais are addicted to popular brand name, which mostly come from other countries. And most popular brands are from Europe zone, USA, and Japan. Sometime it looks funny when Thais' trend occur. Everyone use the same thing and you can see these everywhere!

  4. I think one popular product that come from another country now is the garret popcorn. I saw many people wait for a long time to buy this popcorn. I have never try it, so I don't know how delicious is that. However, I have asked one of my friend who have tried it. She said that for her idea, she think that this popcorn is not that delicious and too sweet. Also, it's very expensive. Therefore, I pop up some question that the popcorn is really delicious or it's just a new trend.

  6. When I was in school and also in university, especially girls in my faculty, I always had seen people, most of my friends and some of teachers used the bag with label with the word 'Harrods', My first thought is what is that? and why people always use it. And I was informed that this Harrods bags are imported from U.K. , so a person who hold the bag can be assumed as the person who travel aboard to the country. Personally, I think this bag is not just a normal plastic square shape, but positioning goods. In sociological terms positioning goods means that good or product which has the extra value in terms of representing the social position, in stead of normal using - to carry things. I shop, therefore I am is the motto that fits our society, nowadays.

  7. In my opinion, one value that is important in my culture is hierarchy. In the past, Thailand's society had many status mostly depending on family and money, but you could increase your status if you had great ability, such as helping country in war. Nowadays, a gap between each status become smaller. However, this value is still clearly seen in Thailand. People in lower status respect people in higher status. I think hierarchy is very important to my culture. It makes our society not full of chaos.

  10. Topic: A popular product in your country that comes from another country

Nowadays, most of people inn Thailand like to use product comes from another country such as China, Japan, US., Europe, and so on. The reason that why they like to use products from another country because they might be believes that it has more quality of product. For example, women like to use brandname, especially from abroad such as bags, clothes, and so on. They believes that it is an authentic. Some people use brandname because they think that can make them look good.
