My Yes/No question is:
Is Science dangerous?
My answer is:
No, but it depends on the usage.
Science in my view is the tool we use to understand the world around us. However, from gun powder to nuclear bomb have killed many people on the human history. We can also use the knowledge to make our live for better or worse.
In July 16, 1945 the first nuclear bomb was detonated on the dessert in New Mexico under the Manhattan Project. J. Robert Oppenheimer was a director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, where they created the first nuclear bombs, which used to kill almost 129,000 people in Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. This bomb also leads to many conflicts in this world.

In my opinion, war causes the advance in technology. The government funded the scientist to create the weapon that used to kill their opponent. All the theory and knowledge lead to another "creative" innovation. For example, microwave ,that we use to cook, was created by the scientist who is working on the radar using to microwave wave to search for Nazi in World War 2.
"To every man is given the key to the gates of heaven. The same key opens the gates of hell. And so it is with science." - Richard Feynman
I believe that we are now living in the most peaceful time in the history of mankind. We have almost everything we need : food supply, healthcare and education. Our life quality is much better than ever before because of science and our knowledge to use them. There are no major war occurring right now.
What do you think? Has science made us live in better world?

I like Phu's concluding paragraph, in which he corrects a common misunderstanding. Reading the news, you might think society was becoming more violent, but it isn't. As we become richer, humans are also becoming more peaceful and better in every way than our ancestors. This progress is a good thing, and I think science contributes in a couple ways: it doesn't just give us a better understanding of the world, it also gives us a better way of seeing the world we inhabit.
ReplyDeleteI really agree because sometimes the mass hysteria came from the news or social media. I remember the game when we get the massage from the teacher and pass it over the whole classroom. The result is the massage is distorted completely. Same as social network.

DeleteEverything has both advantages and disadvantages; it's depended on how we use. Advanced technologies are rapidly developed so that people should use them appropriately. Science isn't dangerous if we use it for good purposes. But some people have a chance to use it in bad sides, like terrorists, robbery, etc. However, we can live conveniently today because people in the past could invent good gadgets to serve us.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Oat. And also I like the quote from Richard in your post a lot. We cannot jump into the conclusion that science is good or bad. It depends on who and how to use it. The medical advancements which cure thousand of people around the world are developed from science. On the other hand, the bombs which are used to kill another thousand innocent people is also based on the knowledge of science as well. Science is not purely good or bad. Instead, the purpose of using it indicates good or bad.
