Heidi: my favourite book

I started my intensive programs in order to improve my English language skills in July this year. Furthermore, in past August, I had a chance to read total of seven books of fictions and novels; however, only one book that I was very impressed and fallen in love with it, that is, Heidi (the story of a lovely Swiss girl who lives with his grandfather on the Alps). This book is my favourite book because I always smile and am very happy when I read it and I can repeatedly read it again and again without boring.

In “Book Club Reviews: Heidi by Johanna Spyri”, Bronagh says that if you are people who like to be happy, like adventures, and like a changing story, this book is for you; moreover, a little wonderful girl in this book might bring you to see your life in the other perspective.

My first impression is a story of Johanna Spyri who is an author of this book. In very first pages of this book (I read a version of Macmillan publisher.), you will find a page named “A Note About The Author”. From this page, you will read a summary of her biography, and my most impression is her dedication to help injured soldiers from the Franco-Prussian War, to help poor people, and to visit schools.

In essence, I received much of happiness when I read the story. In this story, you will follow adventures of a little girl named Heidi. Her parents passed away when she was young; thus, she had to live with her grandfather who is an isolated old man and no one in his village can talk with him. However, a lovely and caring girl could live with him. In addition, I still remember one scene that shows his kindliness. A lovely girl came back his hut with a lot of questions about environments that she found, and one of them was why bright and warm orange light shines after a beautiful mountain when sunset. The grandfather answered this question that this light occurs because sun want to warmly say goodbye to a mountain, and let a mountain know that the sun will come back to meet it again tomorrow.

These are only two happy examples that I received from reading this book. In this book, you will also be happy with a lovely and caring girl, beautiful natural scenes, and sincere friendships. Additionally, I promised myself that if I have a chance, I will share my good experience from this book and recommend it to people who I care.

Have you ever felt boring while travelling or on the plane? Why do not you pick this book with your trip and enjoy reading it while travelling on the plane or vehicle?

  1. I'm very glad to hear that you like reading novels. Although I chose Lord of the Flies because it offers some useful opportunities to practice academic reading and, especially, writing skills, it's also a great novel, and one of the modern classics of English literature, so I am also hoping that you will enjoy it.

I hope the first ten pages this evening are ... enjoyable. And that makes me think that I could have added another option to the list of argumentative essays for academic writing 2.

    1. Sup, (and everyone else),

The correct way to write the reference list entry is:

Bronagh. (n.d.). Heidi by Johanna Spyri BBC Student Life. Retrieved November 13, 2012 from http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/studentlife/bookclub/reviews/heidi_spyri.shtml

We don't always know an author's real name, for example for blog posts or YouTube videos, so we use whatever name is publicly given, in this case "Bronagh" is all we have for the name, so that's the correct one to use. And sometimes the author is a group, so the group name is used.

If there is no date, write (n.d.). When you cite the source in your writing, the reader then needs to know, as usual:

      1. the first piece of information in the reference list entry, whether that is the title of the article or the name of an author, such as Bronagh, and

      2. the year of publication, which = n.d.

Don't worry, the rules concerning this are a little complex. The best way to learn is by practising, as we are doing in these blog posts. There are more examples in the handout with questions for academic writing 2, and the next reading in Quest, "The Anthropological View of Religion" includes both citations in the text and a References section (Hartmann & Blass, 2007, pp. 23 - 25).

You don't have to learn everything at once. And I often have to check the standard reference when I'm not sure about something unusual. The important thing is ... what exactly?

You cited your source almost perfectly in the summary part of your blog response to the article. There is no serious problem.

    2. Thank you very much. I spent around one hour in order to search her real name and date of publication. Finally, I decided to adapt it by myself.

  2. Because I cannot find Bronagh's biography (I am not sure her real and full name), and I cannot find the date that the book review that I refer to in my response essay, I cannot perfectly follow the rules in the second paragraph (summary of the article) and in reference section.

  3. I love reading book during taking public transportation, especially MRT. Last term, I read most of a book"A curious case of a dog in the night" during I took MRT on my way to an back from AUA,but for this term I think the book is a lot more complex. I think it will make me frown all the way from Bang Sue Station to SamYan Station because I don't know the definition of many words in the novel. lol

    1. So am I. Because commuting between my home and schools around Chulalongkorn University consumed my time around five hours per day, I always utilize this period by reading books and digesting my knowledge. In addition, I agree with your comment that Lord Of The Flies will consume full five hours during my travelling in order to understand all contexts.

  4. You make me indulge in reminiscence. I read the book 'Heidi' a long time ago, after watching the animation series on TV. When I watched it on TV, I was too young to read books. So, I didn't know its original is a book. I remember the feeling of disappointment after reading it. Sometimes, there are cases that a movie or an animation is better than its original book, but most of the cases are not. In my memory, there isn't about the book, only animation series. It's a sort of trauma for me. I'm hesitationg about reading the book 'Howl's Moving Castle', it is animated by Miyazaki Hayao. I find now, the animation series 'Hidie' is a Japanese animation by Takahata Isao. I still remember Heidi's feature and her special bed made of straw.

  5. When I was young, I always read a book after dinning with my family in the living room then discussed a little bit about it or told them new things that they'd known before. My mom is interested in being healthy. She reads a lot of books about health. Now even she lives in Hadyai, she always calls me and tells me what I should or should not eat in order to being healthy.

    1. Is "Had-Yai" your home town? Southern provinces of Thailand are my destination that I plan to live after retirement. You are lucky that your mom always concerns about your health; moreover, I guess I found a coach who can advise me how to improve my health and answer some interesting questions about healthy materials of Peter, that is, your mom. Thank you.

  6. Heidi was one of my favorite books in childhood. Her small room in the attic of grandpa's hut, fresh goat milk, and as same as Katie's case, her straw bed attracted me so much that I made one by myself. Unfortunately, it was not as comfortable as I expected. The book I read had only a few illustartions, but they were enough to arouse my imagination. The animation version Heidi is very popular in Japan, and I enjoyed watching it, but what I remember is not vivid animation, but monotous illustrations, which turn into colorful landscape in my imagination.

Heidi was on of my ideal charaters all during my childhood.I would have read books on the pile of straws in my house, then we lived in the countryside and every autumn my father prepared the big stack for the cows and to reading on them was a big delight for me. Absolutely it was inspired by Heidi's story.

    1. I agree. It's a good idea to read different kinds of texts: news stories, textbooks, academic writing, and novels, among others.

It isn't a mystery, but I hope you're enjoying, or at least not hating, Golding's novel. It's not as depressing as the excellent 1984 that Cee is reading.
