Phong's non-formal academic interests.

When I was about 10 years old, I was first introduced to meditation by my aunt. She likes to do meditation about 1-2 hours a day. I took the first course about how to practice meditation since then. Normally while practicing meditation, I was taught that we should sit still, do anything slowly and be mindful as much as I could. However, I partly agree with this idea because meditation can be done in the normal pace of living, and included in everyday's life. For example, when I speak to others, First I see whether he/she is ready to listen. and Second, I think of what I want to speak to that person is appropriate or not. Lastly, I decide to speak out if it is alright. That is one example that I can adopt the concept "mindfulness" from meditation into an intensive practice, and everyday's life.

  1. I graduated in business field and majored in accounting. It was a good decision that I'd made before I went to university. Now even I have been studying full-time English, I can work as a part-time accountant at the same time.

  2. I'm afraid that business does not excite me at all, although I have learnt enough when I needed it to start and run a small business. It was sort of exciting setting it up, but I'm not a good employee for following instructions and just doing some simple task over and over. I don't think I'm a very good manager, either.

    1. At first I was like you, Peter. I was brought up in the environment of family owned business, but I wanted to do something else. Some parts of the business are quite repetitive, but it would be different if you are the owner. You can change most parts of your own business from tiny little routines to new big investment.

  3. Chicago Booth – Great learning system

One week that I have a chance to study in the same class as you, but I just know that you are interested in business administration. Can I give some information or I should say can share my impression on the experiences from an Executive MBA, The University of Chicago Booth School of Business?

The most impressive experience is learning system of the school especially professional and outstanding professors. Professors always design and customize cases study in order to lead students to analyse, learn, and understand critical contents; moreover, professors are not focus on only contents but also kindly take care students’ stress. For instance, actually, for the second week of financial accounting course, the contents are very fit compared with class schedule. However, one day before class start, all students have to take the full day examinations, and everyone is exhausted. Professor knows that news so he decides to tune and reduce his contents for the first lecture in order to provide a chance for all students to have some rest and refresh their energy. This is only one of much evidence that makes me impressed on the school’s learning system and people.

You can access more information through the website http://www.chicagobooth.edu/ and thank you for this chance to share my impression.

    1. Although business does not excite me, there are a couple of brilliant economists at the University of Chicago. Have you read any of Steven Levitt's work? He does mainly behavioural economics, but his skill with statistics, getting and using them, is impressive.

I sometimes use a couple of his essays in higher level AEP classes, like 5 - 7. I haven't decided yet for this term. I'll see how we're going in a couple of weeks.

    2. In fact, economics is another academic area in which I've been interested for many years, but have never studied after high school. I think economists do some fascinating work that can help us understand not just how the world we construct around us works, but also how we work.

  4. I think it's a good idea for every school to customize their courses and take good care of the students themselves. This will lead to an easy-going that both professors and students can teach and study more effectively.
