Taking risk for a purpose on health

Being in a good shape is the admiration of many people, but now there is a trend in teenagers to use a shortcut for building muscle and losing weight.

According to Nancy Shute's "More Teens Take Steroids To Trade Fat For Muscle", the most recent study shows that the use of steroids in American teenagers this year is higher by 4.9 percent than 1.1 percent in 2011, most of them are students, especially school athletes such as gymnasts and ballet dancers. The most surprising finding is the misunderstanding among adolescence that protein powder can transform fat into muscle and many of them try it in order to lose their weight whereas the common suggestion is to work out more and to change eating habits.

A large number of the overweight intend to go on a diet and weight loss program, either by exercising or by food selection. However, some of them are accustomed to laziness and not willing to be tired from working out or even be sweaty. This mode of thinking drives them to choose a shortcut like steroid and protein powder as stated in the article. Almost 10 years ago my weight was up to 90 kilograms. After I consider overweight causes many health risks and problems, I decided to control my eating habits by reducing the amount of food particularly carbohydrates and also started working out by running in a park nearby my place.

Another tip is to realize that doing things can be an exercise. An ad on TV in Thailand says "Just move is equivalent to exercise" which I totally agree that it is true because I prove this suggestion myself. If I don't have chance to go exercise, I walk from BTS Saphan Taksin Station to my home about 10 minutes instead of using motorbike taxi. Or when you have time enough to go upstairs, avoid the elevator. We can adjust our behaviour to use energy from food we take in, but it is based on your volition. If not willing, it will definitely fail.

For ones who build up their muscle by taking steroids or whey protein I partly disagree because I am certain that they are able to pick natural protein to support their muscle building. In Thailand, males also build their muscle to represent their masculinity and also to reach their goal of being magazine models or models on cat walk. As I has been working out at a gym, I always see a group of them taking whey protein in a form of drink or shake. However, I still believe that taking those unnatural also means taking risk for their health.

Back to basic is better than relying on a risky shortcut.

  1. I absolutly agree with you. Walking is my favorate exercise. Around for one year I had given up walking for the hot weather in Bangkok, but I found that early morning and close dusk it's good to walk. Walking with music is a source of energy for me, in addition to I can manage my weight.

  2. A shortcut to good shape, I prefer a lean body, will be so attractive, if it is safe. I think workout's purpose is not only on physical health or shape, but also on psychological satisfaction and settlement. Any kinds of shortcuts don't give us satisfaction that can feel after exercising.

I know exercise in the real life is very helpful my body, and just by this I could keep my shape. However, Bangkok is too hot, and the air around my living area is seriously polluted. If I worked out outside, I would have a respiratory disease soon. It seems like an excuse of my laziness, but it is my real reason why I don't like walking outside.

I used to work out for many years, from when I was at uni., but the last few years, I've gotten out of the habit. I don't especially want much muscle these days, just to be in decent shape and healthy.

And like Cee, I don't think that takes too much effort - I always walk to and from work, and I think being up and moving around in the classroom is probably helpful.

Every now and then, I think it would be good idea to get into the habit of running up a few flights of stairs in my condo. building. But that seems such a hard habit to get into. When would I do it?

  3. As Cee points out, human beliefs, often false and totally unsupported by any shred of evidence, can be deadly. Some years ago, Gingko biloba, a traditional herbal remedy, was popular with a group of my friends, whose only "evidence" was that it was a traditional remedy - research then showed that it really did contain some powerful drugs that might be beneficial for some users, but also that it could be very dangerous for other users because of its interactions with other drugs that they were then taking for real medical problems.

But it isn't just the users for whom false beliefs about the effectiveness of things can be deadly. Just yesterday, for example, I read about the the disastrous effects on pangolin populations because of the use of that animal in traditional Chinese medicine (Gill, 2012), in which I believe rhinoceros horn is also believed, again falsely and with no sound evidence at all, to be a powerful aphrodisiac. The fools who believe and take such "medicines" are rapidly driving these and other species to extinction.
