Getting into Unit 4 = Scale (SkRW2, p37, Discussion point)

What we read

On page 37 of Skillful, Rogers and Wilkin (2013) give us the usual large photograph and some discussion questions to introduce unit 4, which is titled "Scale."

Rogers and Wilkins' questions

  • Look at the picture on page 37. How would you describe the building? Where do you think it is?

  • What are some of the biggest buildings in your country? Do you know what's in those buildings?

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages for consumers of buying from large companies?
As usual, Rogers and Wilkin also suggest some language to help you start your sentences, but it's up to you whether you use that or not.

  1. If i hadn't read the information about it, I would not have known where it was. My guess was a large mall in China, but I was wrong.

My first idea was that it looks even bigger and more luxurious than Paragon, which is my favourite shopping mall in Bangkok. I love the great variety of products, especially imported ones, that are available at Paragon, which I visit most weeks for some shopping in the supermarket there. Tops at Silom Complex is good for daily groceries, but there is a lot more availeble at Paragon.

What are the biggest buildings in my country? I'm really not sure. I guess one is the very old Queen Victoria Building in central Sydney, which occupies an entire city block. It's a beautiful old sandstone building that was renovated very well about thirty years ago. My favourite chocolate shop is there, so I always visit when I'm in Sydney.

In Thailand, I immediately thought of Mahanakorn Tower, which is near my home, and I think a great piece of modern architecute, although not all of my friends agree with this judgement. I often visit the Dean & Deluca shop in the Cube at Mahanakorn, and there are a couple of other restaurants there that I want to try.

  2. Thammaguy temple is one of the biggest building in my opinion, and it definitely is bigger than Paragon mall hahaha. This temple is a well-known place, also in news, especially in making merit in previous year, we knew that a large amount of money has been donated to this place. Because some people was conducted to believe that donateing money can change your bad karma. So I think that it is't rational much. That may be the reason why this place is very big big big.

  3. By looking at this picture of the building. It looks really big and maybe luxury. If it is compared to the building in Thailand, it should be Paragon or Emquartier.
In my opinion, the biggest building in Thailand may be Mega Bangna. It's a department store that contain many shopping store.
The advantage of buying things from large companies is you will get the quality things than non-brand shop, but the disadvantage is they are expensive.

  5. I think the building in the picture looks like a shopping mall, but I don't know where it is. It is very huge. There are at least four floors, and each floor has variety of shops. The decoration is quite elegant. I like the tiles pattern on the ground floor when looking from above. There are not too many people there which is good because I don't like crowded shopping mall.

  6. The building have an interesting space in the center, and also fashion and modern. I think it's in the center of the city. It's a big department shop. We have lots of big buildings in China, we can buy lots of brand goods in this shopping mall. It include native brands and foreign brands. I don't like the huge shopping mall, because I usually lost way in this building and it's difficult to find something you want to buy quickly. But It's also convenient, you can buy most of daily supplies in one shop.

  7. It look really a big space for a shopping mall. The big area on the ground floor is for the event. In this picture it's look similar to Central world at Chitlom Bnagkok. There has a big space for support many thousand people and the big event can be there.

The tallest building in Thailand is located in Bangkok Chongnonsi , named Mahanakorn. It has everything in there such as a condominium , office , restaurant.

  9. From page 37, I saw a very big shopping mall building. It has circle ground in the center with huge terrace of each floor. The building seem a little bit luxury and old fashion.

In my country, I don't know which building is the most biggest but in Thailand, ' Mahanakorn" is the most highest building. Mahanakorn is designed to be accommodation and restaurant.

If you choose to be a consumer of a large company, you will get special treat more as usual and the goods always have high-quality. However, the special things you get will come in return of high prices.
