Sound: before reading 1 "The Secret Garden: an Excerpt" (SRW3, p88)

What we read

As usual, before we read a text, Bixby and Scanlon invite us to think about the topic or ideas that are coming up. The first  reading in Unit 9 of Skillful is titled "The Secret Garden: an Excerpt," and as usual, there is a question to share our ideas on before we read it.

Bixby and Scanlon's question

  • When you were young, or younger than you are now, do you remember a place that was secret or mysterious, or where you used to hide?
    • Where was it?
    • What did you do there? Did you play games, read, talk with a friend, or other things?

  1. When I was young, I used to hide under the Thai-style chair which has a lot of space to do things. I love to got there with my neighbor,Mos. We always played Barbies and playing with wooden blocks to built some house and town.

In addition, I have been thought that I want a tree house to play and hide with my friends, but there was no tree that big enough to build one for me.

    1. Nice's comment reminds me of playing under chairs at home with my brothers and sisters. They could be lots of things: forts, prisons, and more. And that reminded me of the fun we had with the large cardboard boxes that arrived when our parents bought a new TV or other appliance. Those boxes were great for playing in.

  2. One of my secret place was in a library. It was at downstairs where tons of books were organized on piles of bookshelves. So I would find some space between those shelves to take a nap, whispering talk to my friends. Anyways, as It was so quiet there, other people still heard us. And It would not be a secret anymore.

  3. When I was a student, there were several small, enclosed gardens among the old buildings at Sydney University. There were small patches of green, with trees, flowers and lawn that were surrounded by old sandstone walls. There were animals and crests carved into the stone, and there were seats to sit on. Many of them also had old statues from Greece or Rome, or perhaps copies of ancient bronzes. Most students might never have found these places since I didn't often see anyone else there. They were wonderful places to read in peace or to chat with friends.

When I was even younger, the space between the floor of my primary school and the ground it stood on was a mysterious place. My classmates and I crawled in the 24 inches or so, making forts and waging battles. I never thought of it, but we must have been filthy with dirt when we went back to class after lunch time.

  4. I used to hide in an abandoned house which near my village. It was a permanent labour house where I used that place to play hide and seek. This not quite a safe place because every seekers always know that I was in the house.

  5. I remember that when I was younger than now, I like to stay in a room under a stair in my house. At that room, I usually sat on the floor with my brother and read a cartoon book.

    1. My grandmother's house had place like that. Hers was filled with strange old things like Aladdin's cave of treasures: old gilt cigarette cases, wine bottles, leather gloves, ironing sprinklers, and lots of other things. We didn't know what a lot of them were, and that made them even more mysterious.

  6. When I was a child I used to hide myself from my parent in the garden at the back out of our house. The garden was big. In fact it was the place where we grew some mango trees and the other kind of big trees. I loved to be there to play with my dogs. There was a big pond where I played with some fish.

  7. I grew up out of Bangkok. When I was younger, most of the time, I played outside with my friends. We had a lot of places to play, but my favorite one was the construction site. It was 4 stories. We ran from floor to floor playing hide and seek. Of course, it was a deep secret. No parents would allow their kids to play in any construction site. It's too dangerous.
I checked on the google street not long ago. There's a family lives there already. Sure, it was like 20 years ago. I wonder would they know there were children running in their house before.

  8. When I was a child, my home nearby a small garden, this is a secret garden, because there had a underground dugout. I think it's very interesting, but I can't go there, because just higher grade students can stay there. I was so jealous. When I grow up, other people closed the dugout, so I never go in the dugout, I just see the door. The higher grade students usually talk some mysterious topic in the dugout.

  10. I was young,I remembered one secret place for hanging out with my friends in my street. That place is my friend's tree house. We had to climb the ladders to go up there. Although it is quite small, it is proper for four of us. It is where we hide our parents and we usually brought some snacks and drinks to eat there while we was playing a board game. It is one of the most memorable part in my young life.

  11. I can’t think of any secret place but I remember a specific spot at which my friends and I used to be together after lunch when we were in primary school. The place I am talking about was not a mysterious or a secret hidden place at all. It is just a spot in my school where there are some huge rocks on the green grass. After having lunch, my friends and I used to gather around those rocks and just have some fun. Some activities are, for example, talking, playing games and climbing up and down the rocks.

  13. One place which is no so secret is a a cartoon rental shop. My sister and I used to go there after a special English class we need to take in a summer. We quickly picked the one we like, paid for the rent then sometimes we just read it in the shop or sometimes we took it to the English school which is in walking distant from the shop and read it while we waited for our mother to come pick us up and take us home.

There was a time that we come back from the shop to the school late. Surprisingly, our mother walked in. We were so stunned then later figure out that an officer at the school pointed out where might we be.
