What should we do to protect the people from natural disaster?

Because of my work, I have to follow the environmental situation both in Thailand and other countries every day in order to use it to be database for forecasting possibility of the same situation whether it will be happened in Thailand or not.

After I checked BBC News for my homework, I found an interesting article that is “Landslide buries 30 in north-western Colombia”.

Following to the article, north-western Colombia has got the problem about a landslide which has the main cause from heavy rain and about 30 people may have been buried under many tons of rock and mud. Now, the officials try to search and rescue the victims. Furthermore, the article report that “President Juan Manuel Santos, who visited the scene, said people had ignored warnings to stay away from the site of the previous landslide.”

After I read the news, I have many questions in my mind. One of them is why people ignored warnings. In my opinion, the people ignored warning because they do not believe in the warning of the officials. Why they do not believe? It might be the reliable information because the officials cannot proof more than 50 percent whether the situation will happen or not; therefore, it can make the people do not believe in the warning. The same problem about warning neglect has been happening in Thailand.

What should the officials do for solving this problem?

  1. I love your summary. It's intelligible. Is this diaster is an effect from global warming? I don't know the way to solve the problem but I think the citizen should more aware the important of warning.

  2. In similar opinion of you the people ignored the official warning because they believed in history and absorbed themselves in the problem of their choices.

Nowadays government really try to do it, preparing people to escape unhurt when the fire in high building explode or when the great flood in natural site. Most people are aware of the importance of their lives.

  3. After I'd read NK's comment, I realize something. The government should create the device which can check that the soil can stand still or not. Likely, in the oceans, we have a device which can detect the frequency of tsunami's wave before it kills people in the land.

Actually, we have a soil testing by engineering for construction. Soil testing on regular bases is an important part before a building has been constructed footing. Sometimes developer want to decrease a construction cost so they pass this important step. The big problem come and appear after.

    You seem expert about soil....lOl....^_^

After I read this article, I realized that the natural disaster can happen anywhere and anytime. So, the goverment official should more beware on it, and they should teach Thai people more how to deal with all kinds of natural disaster when it happend to us.

  6. Why should the government do anything?
Why should the government be allowed to do anything?

If people know that there is a risk and they still decide to take that risk, shouldn't they be allowed to do that provided they do not put other people at risk?

And private enterprise can and does create warning systems, probably far better and more efficiently than wasteful governments.

  7. For Thiland, I don't think the official can help us enough, but we should begin to help ourselves to study the effect of those disasters. It might be Thailand doesn't have to face with crisis disaster like the incident in your article. That is they don't understand why it is important to prevent untill they aqquired it from their experience. For example, they hadn't understood the damages from Tsunami when it happened and affected lifes and properties badly. Nowaday, the people who is at the risk area have the cooperation with official to prevent it better.
