According to “Massive rise in Asian eye damage”, numerous studies have shown a link between close reading and intensive study and myopia. Myopia, or short-sightedness, now is effect to the student in school leavers in the major cities of countries such as China, Japan and South Korea. The rise in myopia in East Asia might therefore “the problem is being caused by a combination of factors - a commitment to education and lack of outdoor light” (¶ 9). Staying indoors, poring over books and intense levels of education has been clause for epidemic of short-sightedness. They don’t use proper eyewear when doing various activities that may be dangerous to eyes. So the protective effect seems to be associated with total time outdoors such as sport.
From my experience, I was almost operating on my eye because I read many book at night in long times. I think our eyes are important in almost all our activities. Because eyes come only one pair not two or three to a customer, your eyes deserve all the care and protection that you can give to them. The most important thing you can do is to wear eye protection when there is a danger of flying particles, dust or harmful liquids getting into your eyes, sleeping for rest one's eyes and do not stress. Connecting to sunlight may protect eyesight by stimulating the release of retinal dopamine in the brain.

I like the way Min's source supports the explanation that it's not genetic but behavioural factors with cultural links that are responsible for this burgeoning problem for studious Asian kids.
ReplyDeleteI thought an obvious solution, as Min suggests in her last sentence, was to get them out playing in the sun for a while every day. Can that be so hard to do?
I think it is very hard to do because the education can be a cause of this problem on students. High school workloads, and later college workloads, are heavy for many students. The competitive circumstances and exams can make students that don’t want to do activity or playing outdoors. And the new education system will add the time of studying.
